Procedure to get Fallout 2 to run perfectly under Windows 7 64-bit.
I posted a procedure in the Fallout forum that fixed all the problems I had with Fallout in order to make it run smoothly under Win 7 64-bit. I found another mod and procedure that also Fixed Fallout 2 to run smoothly under Win 7 64-bit.

One important note is that once this "Fallout 2 Restoration Project" procedure is applied, any old saves won't work any longer, You will have to start a new game. So it's better applied before you start playing.

Here's the procedure:

1. Download "Fallout 2 Restoration Project" (Windows installer) from this location:

http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=56087

2. copy the file to your Steam Fallout folder:

example path: Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Fallout2\

3. Run the file and follow it's installation directions.

4. Start Fallout2 from Steam.

5. Select the "options" screen.

6. Next to the words "Game preferences" at the top left of the options screen there is a button called "Scan". Select it.

7. Change the "Colours" toggle switch to "16-bit" (very important).

8. Set the resolution desired and select "done".

9. Restart Fallout 2 and enjoy. ;)

Fallout 2 Restoration Project is a mod to the original game, however it's very well done and stays faithful to the original story and gameplay (the changes are mainly subtle and for the better).

It's very important you don't apply any other patches or mods other than the Fallout 2 Restoration Project. It has all the proper patches and resolution mods built-in and any other patches or mods will glitch it.

You should link to the latest and most stable version of FPR. It has more content and more bug fixes.

Killap edited the post I linked to reflect the current version (2.1.2b) so it's the same. However your link is possibly less confusing. I'll edit the procedure. Thanks for the heads-up.

Your fallout guide was perfect, as was this one. Thanks for making the patching process incredibly simple for the rest of us :)

Yeah, FO2 Run on Win 8. THX.

I am using the notebook PC.
Patched FO2 does not correspond to tapping of a trackpad.
the function of tapping is off, it will run well.

I repair and build custom computers for a living, however it's really difficult to diagnose such problems without knowing all the hardware, software and driver configurations on any particular PC.

What video card do you have? There may be an incompatibility with some setups. Just spitballing of course, but you might try updating your video drivers to the latest (if they aren't already).

What do you mean by "problem with the resolution"? If you mean the rainbow pixels; did you change the colors to 16-bit?

I suppose I should be more specific about the error.. Whenever I try to open the game I get the error "Error Running in Video Mode 640X480". But anyways, nope, sorry. Updating my drivers did not help. Any other clues? i'm assuming it means resolution because don't starve runs in 640X480 window. Any way to change that outside of the game so I can maybe run it?

Killap's patch has many dialogue fixes that are probably only compatible with the english version. This patch/mod may only work with the english version of Fallout 2 as a result.
