FPS drops in smoky areas. GTX 770 (Temporary Fix Update/Video update)
Hello, first my specs.
i5-2400
GTX 770 ACX SC
8GB RAM
Win 10 64-bit
Drivers: 368.22

Essentially I usually have a healthy 60+ fps, however in very smoky areas it drops to 30fps this is especially true in the lava areas of the third level. I played a lot with with the settings both resolution scale and a bunch of others. Nothing really seems to make a dent aside from Virtual Textures however I set that to Low or Medium anyway.

Here is a nice video made by Walrusaurus that clearly shows the bug in action it has before and after:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYVgE879MoA

Here is another made by The Hom of Plenty, it essentially applies the shadow fix but doing the same thing to Virtual Textures:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAN8hG0-S2E

The below is for people who like to show off:
Please do not reply with things like "Dur Dur I am getting 120+ fps on my GTX 970 or GTX 980" those kind of replies are not helpful at all. Also don't just simply say upgrade your rig, since that solution can be thought of by anyone even a dimwitted monkey.

Solution 1
Set Shadows to Ultra when the bug happens play for a few seconds then switch to Low Shadows, Alt-Tab once however I am not sure if Alt-Tab is neccesary. Play for a few seconds on Low Shadows and the bug magically disappears. Glory to everyone who participated in finding and spreading this fix.

Solution 2
Delete the cache folder in AppData or reinstall the driver which rebuilds the cache. This is only a temporary fix as the problem will show up again from time to time, so it must be applied periodically. I have messaged id and will see if they will provide a better solution.

Cache folder below:
C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\id Software\DOOM
You have to make sure to "Show hidden files and folders"

Optional Nvidia Cache:
Delete 'GLCache' found in the "C:\Users\Kade\AppData\Roaming\NVIDIA" directory.

Update: It seems that id is too busy, however I heard some people who send a ticket get a reply that they are looking in to it. I guess enough people submitted tickets so now they have to look into it, instead of just dismissing the issue.

Probably need to lower the setting that controls smoke/fog. Effects maybe?

Tried all of that already, settings everything to low and lowering every possible setting still gives like 34-40fps in smoky areas where as the game be flying everywhere.

Hmm weird. Probably a CPU or VRAM bottleneck then.
Maggy&Me May 13, 2016 @ 6:38am
i have this game maxed out at 1080p at over 100 fps no slow down at all , very strange indeed my card works well while other dont of the same make ?
BrightLord May 13, 2016 @ 6:38am
I don't think its the CPU since usage does not go past 70%. VRAM could be it, however there are people with 670 2gb who have better luck then me.

You got GTX 770 2gb? Or you just trolling with GTX 970.

Also I am not talking about all the time, I am talking about smoky areas since my fps are high too in other areas.

Hiya, I had the same issue on my 770. I also found the solution.

It sounds a bit crazy, but it works.

What happens is something goes wrong in some cache when you change graphics settings. Nothing I can find restores your performance until you do the below fix... not even a system restart. You may never have had good performance if you changed settings prior to playing the actual game.

Set everything to high (yes, all high is fine on a 770) (texture cache can stay on medium for a few more fps if you like).

If you are on todays new drivers, install old drivers, then reinstal the new ones. If you havn't got todays drivers, go and get them and install them.

What this does is it forces a rebuild of the cache that has gone bad. There might be a better way to do it, but this works.

When doom starts up, it will take a little bit longer to load the main menu - it's rebuilding whatever cache it is, and it will restore your performance.

Dont touch the graphics settings after all of that, doing so puts you at risk of having to apply the fix again.

You should have a nice clean 60fps after doing all of that. There's just something weird going on with the compatibility with the 7xx cards.

I have a 770 as well and debating whether to get this game or not atm. I have 8GB of RAM as well but a 3570K@4.3 and on win8.1 instead.

Maybe try bumping shadows down a bit, i know smoke usually has more to do with tess but if looking for ways to increase fps maybe tweak a bit here and there in other areas. is there a setting for smoke/volumetric fog etc
Btw how do you like the game? Im waiting for the hype to subside a bit then do an eval
also maybe drop anything that effects vram usage down a tad.

with my above solution its plays very well. almost constant 60fps on high.

Would you mind posting a screenshot with fps in a smoky area, usually by a Gore Nest.
