Hi,

We cannot do normal "BETA" test via Steam for Linux since the game (Trine original) is already released and Linux platform isn't (Trine original Linux was never released on Steam). If we just enable Linux platform, it will be enabled/released to all users instantly. So Steam really doesn't support the BETA builds in this case when the game is already released.

We can do BETA for Mac OS X though normally like we did for Windows since Windows and Mac OS X are already released platforms. For Linux we have to invent something else or just release the game without BETA test.

And I'm sorry but I cannot give ETA for the release date yet. We are really aiming it to be sooner than later :)

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I am eagerly anticipating being able to play Trine on my Linux machine. I love playing it on other machines, too!
Ah brilliant. So Trine is in the pipeline.
Thank you Frozenbyte if I lived closer the dev team would be getting man hugs :D

Well, I'd give +1 for the Linux edition, but since you guys are going full-speed ahead on this already, and it's expected to be sooner than later, all I can do is thank you for working to make this possible. I'll await the Linux version eagerly but patiently.

Anything new on this?

Not really new, but I can tell that the Linux version is already in pretty good shape, though not really ready to be published yet. At least so far there haven't been really bad setbacks.

Ok thanks looking forward to playing it. Should we be able to see this this year?

I'm sure there would be many linux gamers (including me) who would hunt down possible remaining bugs in a public beta :}

Very true, we love helping to bring new games to our operating system. Should you need any help, let us know :).

Also, thanks a lot for the replies. Even if there's no date, it's nice to know that the port is progressing well, and that the developer listens to their customers.

missing executable sadly...

It seems there are a couple of issues with the current configuration.

  • The Steam launch config points to the nonexistent _enchanted_edition_ subdirectory.
  • ./bin/trine1_linux_launcher_32bit (the program started by trine1.sh) links against libSDL-1.3.so.0, which is not included anywhere in the install. (Why is it still using a pre-release version of SDL 2 anyway?)
  • ./bin/trine1_linux_32bit is compiled with SSSE3 instructions, meaning it won't work on older processors (especially AMD ones).

Also, the wrapper scrips needlessly used nohup and & when launching the program and redirect output to /dev/null, making it harder to find out what is going wrong.
