I have just come back to the game and am now playing the new version. I am trying to flatten my land and can't find any way to raise it. I thought there was a way in the old version to make soil and dump it on the places that needed to be raised but I can't find anything like that in the new version. Do I have to start at the lowest point and use the rake to get flat land now?...

Okay I have my safety hat with the light on it. I have some standing torches. And I want gold, so I'm guessing I have to go deep. But the holes in the pre-dug caves look far too steep to me. I'm worried I'll get stuck in one and have to laboriously dig myself a new slope to get back out. Is there some obvious technique I'm missing to get me deeper down ? Is it possible to carve neat steps ? Or perhaps some use of a scaffold I haven't thought of. Or should I just get as far down as I feel safe, then...
