I see a post about "Limited XBox 360 Controller Support"? Can someone please clarify? I like the looks of this game, but not if I have to use a KB&M. (Please don't comment if your just gonna bash about using a controller. My prefernece is I don't play KB&M games. I'm just looking for useful information on THIS game.)

Me too. I am physically incapable of playing anything but the rare FPRPG (and even then its hard) using KB&M, due to partial paralysis in my left hand.

I have JoytoKey,but setting up profiles is a pain and it usually doesnt work as well as native controller support, so I only use it for games I *really* want.

My controllers are 2 PS3 controllers running Better DS3 and a Logitech F310 that does both direct input and X input(mimics an Xbox controller).

I came here to make a thread like this. No mention 360 controller support on the store page and I thought I would give the benefit of the doubt before buying and check the forum only to find "limited support" seriously what does that even mean? You can move with the thumbstick but none of the action buttons work?

Either do full controller support or don't bother then we all know where we stand. On to the next game I suppose.

Yeah. I'm really curious too. If it was something like "the game works fine with a controller but you have to go through the main menus with the mouse" or "its partial because it only supports one brand of controller (most likely Xbox)", thats ok.

But I have no idea what "limited support" means. And judging by this thread, I'm not the only onr. It sounds like Yaw said, only half the buttons/sticks work. That doesnt make any sense. Who would want a game like that?

Can anyone enlighten us? Does it mean only supports one type of controller, only supports controllers in the actual game, or only supports some functions with a controller?

(On a side note, one would think that if you got your game on Steam, youd be in the forums, at least for the first week or so.)

Sorry for late reply, I am just catching up with the tasks at hand.

Controller is supported fully in the game except the Main Menu and Puzzle UI (Where you solve the tangram puzzle).

Current Controller Action Mapping.
  • Move : Dpad or Left Stick-X
  • Run : B
  • Shatter: Y
  • Attack : Left trigger
  • Jump : Left Shoulder
  • moving Tunning blade direction : Left Stick -Y

There is no in-game UI to change the controller setting, but there is a file where you can change few things. If enough people are interested in using controller we can add the in-game UI for that in next update.

IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE CONTROLLER SETTING USING FILE
Go to the installed folder, and open file in text editor config/xboxcontroller.cfg, the content will look as blow if not copy paste this there.

//Change the game pad controls here
//Player movement is fixed to left stick and Dpad
// available values : A;B;X;Y:left-trigger;right-trigger;left-shoulder;right-shoulder

{
"Shatter":"Y",
"Attack":"left-trigger",
"Jump": "left-shoulder",
"Sprint": "B",
"weaponchange":"I"
}

Yes, we definitely want Gamepad support. All platformers / side-scrollers should have Gamepad support. Stained is the type of game that can only benefit from Gamepad support. It would definitely increase sales as well since most platformers (even PC platformers) come with Gamepad and controller support these days. Thanks!

@DonGiovanni The gamepd is supported please read the post carefully.

An ingame remap UI would be nice. I'm a massive advocate for controller remapping in-game. Because of my hand being the way it is, I have a lot of trouble using either K&M or the LT button if its something that must be used quickly & repeatedly, or held down while using LS.

A game without remappable controls that has certain buttons (whether they are left/right or face) be heavy use buttons can make the game unplayable for people who may not have fully usable hands, but who can play just fine if they remap the controller.

Its a major reason why I play PC games instead of consoles, as console inputs generally arent as mappable.

But at least there *is* a way to change it, so I'll be buying the game.

Thanks.

This is nothing like the controller mapping I just "experienced"...

Move: D-pad
Run: Left Trigger
Shatter: A
Attack: B
Jump: Right Trigger

X, Y, and the shoulder buttons did nothing. This is on an X360 controller BTW, and I haven't touched the .cfg.

Great. Well, I just bought it and I have a Logitech F310. I'll mess around with both the game and the config file and post what I find.

@raixel : We have tested it with only X360, it will not work with regular gamepad, however It can be added easily. Please give me few days and I will add support for any joystick device, Currently I only have XBox-360 but I will go ahead and grab one. I will try yours logitech F310

I will update you shortly on the progress.

It works exactly as Sensei stated when in Xinput mode. Dinput doesnt react at all.

F310s have two modes toggled by a switch on the bottom. "Xinput" mimics an Xbox controller and most all games that work with a 360 controller will work with it just fine. Direct input is just a standard 12 button+sticks & dpad controller that is customizable through Logitech Profiler, usually used for older games.

But yeah, because LT is the "run", and you seem to be doing a lot of running in this game cuz your walk speed is slow, I'm going to have to go screw with the config file for the reasons described above.

Word of advice. If you are going to make a platformer, its a good idea to make it controller native. Insinctively pressing start at the main menu & pause in-game and not having it respond is annoying. And platformers generally arent as fun without a controller.

If you come to group chat I could help you with the config file.

Thanks, but it was real simple. Got it all set up the way I want now. I like the art style, and I love Metroidvania platformers.

Looking forward to this one - thanks for being an active dev who wants to help the community. Sure beats digging around in folders and files and code for the magic lines where the controller config is set up.

Yes, I will have to add some code to enable the gamepad in the UI section. Even though I do that it would be really hard to fully enable gamepad in inventory. Who would imagine solving the tangram (they are just like jigsaw puzzle) using gamepad ?

There are 3 actions
  • Selecting a piece
  • Dragging it
  • Checking where it fits and in that process rotate and move etc..

It would be horrible to do all these translations and rotations using gamepad controllers, so I will leave this part. And the if you guys (those who are playing using controller) wants to unlock the items without solving the puzzle then I can offer you a cheat that will unlocks items for you.

Will that be okay?
