What do you consider to be the best ships, especially for mid to end game?

I read over the guide here. I was wondering if you agree with it about which mercenaries are best? Who do you think is/are the best mercs?

I am new to the game. I want to put my turrets on automatic. How do I do this? I was told to press escape to get the tactical menu but I don't see any tactical menu. If I want to set all turrrets or certain turrents to fight at one tine, how do I do this?...

As a newbie, I have a probably dumb question. I have a weapon in alpha turret, a shield weapon is beta turret and a mining laser in gamma turret. How do I activate them all on a ship? How would I just activate my mining weapon alone? if I get a bigger ship with more turrets, will the same button work for everything ?...
