CRITICAL FIX FOR WINDOWS 8 USERS

Windows 8 users may need to install a specific update for the game to run. Please refer to the sticky for instructions

http://steamcommunity.com/app/289070/discussions/0/340412122406720383/

Add a whitelist for Windows Defender

Some reports have come in saying Windows Defender may conflict with the game. Add a whitelist for the game in Windows Defender.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/instantanswers/64495205-6ddb-4da1-8534-1aeaf64c0af8/add-an-exclusion-to-windows-defender

Run a FULL Windows Update

The issue above is because for some reason you're not running Windows Update. This is bad! Make sure you run a FULL Windows Update on your system and reboot

If you're not on Windows 7 SP1 install SP1 and run another full Windows update

If you're on Windows 8 or 8.1 again run a manual full windows update.

If you cannot run a full Windows Update you need to address that first. The game needs the OS to be fully patched. This is not optional.

Failed to start game (missing executable)

The game requires a 64-bit OS to run. If you are on a 32-bit OS you cannot run the game. You would have to reinstall the OS to a 64-bit compliant version

Vista is not Supported

As per the system requirements Windows 7 or higher is required

Game REQUIRES DX11

If get an error "DX11 compliant card not found" it means you don't have a DX11 compliant card to run the game.

As per the system requirements, the game requires DX11 to run. Your video card must be an

AMD HD5000
Nvidia GTX400
Intel HD4000

or higher to be DX11 compliant. If you do not have a DX11 compliant card the game will not run

Wait DXDiag Says I Have DX11/DX12!!

Many people don't seem to know if their video card supports DX11. In order to check this do the following
  • Click Start->Run
  • Type in "Dxdiag"
  • Press Enter
See the DirectX version here?

THIS IS A LIE

This only shows what the OPERATING SYSTEM supports. Not what your VIDEO CARD supports.

To check what your video card supports
  • Click the Display tab
  • Look in the upper right
  • For Windows 7 look for "DDI Version"
  • For Windows 8/10 look for "Feature Levels"
If you DO NOT see "11" in the "DDI Version or "Feature Levels" line, your video card DOES NOT support DX11

This CANNOT be solved by installing DirectX.

It is a HARDWARE problem with your video card.

Update Your Video Card Drivers

It is also important that you update your drivers through software provided by your video card manufacturer or directly from their site. Using Windows or updating software provided by your laptop manufacturer to find more recently drivers is less reliable, as they will likely only have drivers that initially shipped with the product, or will be out of date with the actual video card manufacturer.

Always make sure you reboot your machine after installing the drivers, just to be safe. Then try relaunching the game.

Laptop users should force their Nvidia/AMD cards

Use the Nvidia Control Panel or AMD CCC to force the game to use your built in GPU instead of the Intel one

This guide should help you depending on your video card:

http://www.howtogeek.com/175281/how-to-force-graphics-options-in-pc-games-with-nvidia-amd-or-intel-graphics/

Reinstall Redistributables

Go to

<steam installation>\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization VI\_CommonRedist

  • Go to DirectX\Jun2010
  • Run Setup.exe
  • YES YOU HAVE TO DO THIS! NO IT DOESN'T MATTER YOU HAVE THE 'LATEST' DIRECTX

  • Go to vcredist\2012
  • Run BOTH vcredist_x64.exe and vcredist_x86.exe

  • Go to vcredist\2015
  • Run BOTH vcredist_x64.exe and vcredist_x86.exe

REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER. This is not optional. Reboot it.

Try running universal C runtime

This isn't really a confirmed fix, but some reports seem to indicate it may help. YMMV

Disable Sharing In the GeForce Experience

http://steamcommunity.com/app/289070/discussions/0/340412122408663293/

Open the GeForce Experience
Disable the "Share" toggle

Possible Audio Fix

http://steamcommunity.com/app/289070/discussions/0/340412122409290437/

If you're having audio issues try the fix here. Unconfirmed if it works but here for posterity

Alienware AlienFX Conflict

The AlienFX causes issues with the game. If you have an Alienware product, or a product tah uses AlienFX (custom keyboards that light up, etc) you may need to uninstall AlienFX

Note I'm NOT a big fan of removing DLL files as this generally cause more problems than it solves. UNinstall any tools that would have installed AlienFX instead. The Reddit post is for reference but do not rename the DLL if possible.

Verify the Integrity of the Game Cache

  • Go to your Steam Library
  • Right click -> Properties on Sid Meier's Civilization VI
  • Click the "Local Files" tab
  • Click on the "Verify Integrity of Game Cache..." button

Run Steam as an Administrator

Try running Steam as an administrator as that can resolve several issues

Disable the Steam Overlay

If you're having issues try disabling the Steam Overlay for the game, and globally.

Where is Linux

Asypr are currently looking into the technical feasibility of a Linux build. For now it is not available. It may be available in the future but not guaranteed.

Can't Rename Cities

Known bug will be addressed

Post your system specs and details about your issue

It's important for the devs to know what your system specs are if they are to troubleshoot issue. Try to put a baseline information such as

OS:
Video Card:
CPU:

You can also go to the Steam Client and go to
Steam-Help-System Information

That window has a lot of technical stuff about your system that can help the devs identify things

Also when describing your problem be as descriptive as possible. They'll need to recreate your problem so more details is always better. Adding screenshots can also be helpful in describing visual issues.

What to do when it says: "preparing to launch" but then the message dissapears in less than a second and isn't even starting the game. It also says that the game is running for a few seconds and then it dissapears

I don't generally address specific symptoms as a single symptom can have multiple possible root causes. Please go through all the fixes above as any one of them could fix your problem

When ever I try to download the game, it stops and says that there was a disk write error with a french file. I have tried downloading and restarting many times already.

Write disk errors are generally issues with anti-virus and such. you can try ot re-veifry the game files but some program is blocking the file

Again I need a detailed descripton of what the actual issue is, and your system sepcs from Steam Help System Information. "It does not work" is not a description"

I experienced screen flickering. Some of the things listed here did not help (I tried two first don't remember which I started with), then I just did all things listed here that could possibly apply to me. It solved the issue. I run geforce 750 M GT on win 8.1.

A 750M indicates you're likely not focing the Nvidia card via the Nvidia control panel, but rather the game is using your underlying Intel card
