I'm pretty sure every person on steam got Dota 2 for free. I did. There are even groups dedicated to giving away Dota keys because people have so many for free

You got that backwards. It's a F2P game that you can pay to access early. However, you can also access it early without paying.
Dota 2 keys are basically free. Even if you don't want to go through the hassle of finding one, there's over 50,000 of them on the marketplace for 3 cents each.
Buying the early access in the store gets you some cosmetics, but the keys don't give those.
