I think you might be asking on wrong forum. You should bring this up to Egosoft forums
There's already non-steam version for Linux. It should not be a big problem to make steam version, I hope :)
Hmmm... Linex version is very fun idea
I've asked Egosoft about this, they say that they aren't planning it at the moment, but it depends on the community. Just take a look at my thread[forum.egosoft.com] on the Egosoft forums and post that you agree with X2 being added to Linux (officially, on Steam)
Especially with X2 being in the Steam-only Humble Weekly Sale it's quite sad that X2 for Linux isn't on Steam...

+1 I never bought anything from the LGP due to the horror stories I heard about their support.
If you have bought X2 on Steam you can use the demo executable from LGP to play on Linux.
Some .mp3 and .dat files need to be converted to .ogg to have sound/voices and also you need to copy some libraries from the demo.

So basically you take a Windows installation of the game and use the Linux executable on it (like we did back then with Doom3 etc).

But yeah, is just for the kicks, it doesn’t really answer the OP question...
Great game, great memories, I used to play this a lot in the past. I would buy this game again if there will be a Linux version available on Steam one day.
Yeap, I'd also prefer to have Linux-steam vervion of the game:)

Wait, so you mean it is possible to make the Windows version work natively on Linux with the demo provided by Linux Game Publishing? If so, then I don't know what Egosoft is waiting for.
Sorry, I missed your question somehow.

Yes, is possible like I (vaguely) described above.
It will not appear as a Linux game in your Steam library of course (that is up to Steam) but you can play it from a shortcut, no wine no nothing.
I didn't played all the way through (I'm not really a fan of the genre) but only few levels.
Would love the older X games on Linux - I could play them on my netbook when I'm away from home.
It woule be really nice to have all X-Games running on linux
