As for the time shift, you can use it any time, not just when you die. The trick is to recognize that some objects are not affected by the time shift. (If it has green sparkles, time-shifting won't affect it) You can use this to your advantage. For example, early on, there are moving platforms with green sparkles; you have to shift time of everything around them until they're lined up for you to jump across.
It's tricky to figure out how to use the time-shifting, but it's a lot of fun. Good luck! :)
