Rage is pretty important for a warrior, because warrior doesn't have as great magic as the other classes, so the summons are it's way of giving it's units that extra little boost that they may need to win the battle.
For everyone not there yet - just play the game for an hour or two, you cannot miss it. When you get a quest from the king to fetch an item from the mages guild, do that at once, and as the previous poster said, talk to the spirits in your inventory to unlock them. Do not worry about not getting Lina and Reaper to work for you at first, you will find their unlocks later and again cannot miss them.
