Un tren, un asesinato y un misterio que nos conducirá hasta Constantinopla. Así arranca The Last Expresss, el galardonado juego de aventuras y misterio de Jordan Mechner, el creador de Prince of Persia, lanzado en el año 1997.

Los años 90 fueron una época de experimentación. Las empresas del sector todavía no tenían el poder y relevancia de ahora y podían permitirse el lujo de trabajar en proyectos no tan enfocados al famoso AAA. Antes del boom de los juegos millonarios, donde precia más el beneficio que una buena historia, encontramos algunas joyas que siguen siendo dignas de recordar.

Este es el caso de The Last Express, donde se atreve con una aventura gráfica de misterio. Sin embargo también podemos catalogarla de vídeo aventura, ya que tiene muchas cinemáticas y parece más como si estuvieses disfrutando de una buena película interactiva. La mayor peculiaridad de este juego es que transcurre en tiempo real, por lo que tienes que estar atento a lo que pasa en los demás escenarios o te perderás parte de la trama y, quién sabe, quizás las pistas clave para resolver todo el enigma.

La historia nos transporta hasta el París de 1914, justo antes de que estalle la I Guerra Mundial. Asumes el papel de Roberth Cath, un joven médico americano que debe encontrarse con su amigo Tyler Whitney en la estación La Gare de l’Est para realizar juntos un viaje hasta Constantinopla en el Orient Express. Al subir al lujoso tren, Cath entrará en una espiral de asesinatos, misterio, traición, romance y mentiras que deberá resolver a contrarreloj si quiere llegar vivo al final del viaje…

Con 30 personajes con los que puedes interactuar y que cada uno representa a un grupo característico de las fuerzas europeas de la época; podemos también conocer el punto de tensión que sufría el Viejo Continente antes de estallar la Gran Guerra. Algunos de estos personajes son: un anarquista ruso, un violinista austriaco, un eunuco persa y el harén al que tiene que custodiar, un traficante de armas alemán… Así hasta completar un gran elenco de figurantes con personalidad e intereses propios.

A medida que el tren atraviesa el continente rumbo al este, debemos mantenernos vivos mientras interactuamos con estos personajes. Estas acciones incluyen, por ejemplo: escuchar a escondidas conversaciones ajenas, escabullirse de los compartimentos mientras te busca la policía, o desactivar una bomba. La historia no es lineal, pero transcurre en tiempo real y cambia con las acciones del jugador. Esto hace que la trama siga un rumbo u otro como resultado de las mismas. Por supuesto puedes fallar y morir, el juego tiene muchos senderos y finales diferentes. Como apunte diré que el guión físico tuvo una extensión de 800 páginas.

Aunque las partidas se guardan automáticamente, existe un reloj con el que podrás “viajar en el tiempo” hasta un punto de control para recoger algún objeto o información que te hayas olvidado.

Lo que más llama la atención al abrir por primera vez el juego son sus gráficos. Mezcla de dibujo animado e imagen real, tiene un estilo muy Art Noveau, recordando a los personajes de Toulouse-Lautrec, recorriendo sus vagones con elegancia y cierta languidez.

Toda la historia transcurre dentro del tren y en ocasiones frustra ya que sientes cierta sensación de agobio porque no puedes interactuar más que en unos pocos vagones. Pareciendo que solo das vueltas arriba y abajo sin ningún sentido. Que no te engañe, eso hace que tengas que pensar muchísimo dónde y cómo ir a cualquier rincón para recopilar pistas.

Todo el metraje del juego está rodado como si fuese una película, y luego tratado mediante rotoscoping, una técnica de animación que permite convertir los movimientos de un actor en una animación “pintando encima”. Mehner lo había usado en menor medida en títulos anteriores como Prince of Persia. Sin embargo, supuso un reto usarlo íntegramente para todo el juego, haciendo que la producción se alargara varios años. A pesar de que hoy en día es algo común, en 1997 no era habitual, y el resultado es bastante curioso. Como ejemplo de rotoscoping podemos mentar la película A Scanner Darkly (2006) protagonizada por Keanu Reeves, eso sí, con un nivel de acabado muy superior.

The Last Express fue lanzado finalmente al mercado en 1997 después de cinco años de desarrollo y con un coste final de unos 5-6 millones de dólares. A pesar de que el juego recibió críticas altamente positivas y fue galardonado con varios premios, solamente permaneció en las tiendas unos pocos meses, desapareciendo sin dejar rastro. Sin embargo, aún le esperaba un largo camino por recorrer hasta nuestros días.

¿Y os imagináis qué destino tuvo un juego que fue muy premiado pero olvidado en poco tiempo? En el año 2000, la desarrolladora y distribuidora Interplay Entertainment, dueña de juegos como Fallout o Baldur’s Gate, compró los derechos y empezó a venderlo bajo su sello. Poco tiempo después, Interplay quebró y el juego volvió a quedar fuera de circulación.

Fue la llegada de las plataformas digitales las que hicieron posible que, al igual que otros muchos juegos, éste volviera a distribuirse. En 2006, GameTap comenzó a ofrecerlo en su red de suscripción. En 2011, DotEmu lanzó la Edición de Coleccionista, que incluía el making-of y la banda sonora. Ese mismo año, Phoenix Licensing (el actual titular de los derechos de autor del juego) lanzó su versión en la plataforma GOG, aunque únicamente en inglés como idioma jugable. Al poco tiempo se lanzó para Steam con su versión doblada al castellano, y actualmente puede disfrutarse también en Android e IOS con una optimización más que aceptable.

Es curioso como después de tantos años y problemas de distribución, el público no has olvidado este juego que incluso ha dado el salto a los dispositivos móviles. La retro-nostalgia gamer de los 90, sumado a la frescura y originalidad que desprende este título, ha hecho que sobreviva y de esa forma poder recordar una época donde las grandes desarrolladoras apostaban más por la innovación, arriesgando y probando nuevas técnicas en vez de ir a lo seguro y priorizar la rentabilidad de un juego.

Así que, si quieres lanzar una mirada al pasado y disfrutar de un juego con un guión que engancha, alejado de tópicos y fuera de lo común, dale una oportunidad a The Last Express, un tributo a otro tiempo y a otra forma de hacer entretenimiento. ¿Podrás sobrevivir al viaje?

The Last Express es una aventura diferente, de autor, y esto se nota en todos sus aspectos.

Que esto sea bueno o malo depende del jugador pero tiene mucho merito la apuesta que hizo el juego en su dia por ofrecer una alternativa distinta a las clasicas aventuras de point and click que copaban el mercado.

Lamentablemente es un juego que no ha envejecido del todo bien. Es completamente jugable y disfrutable pero tiene un interface desastroso y un sistema de inventario y guardado algo confuso. Por otra parte lo que en su dia fue pura innovacion y un claro reclamo para las ventas, esa tecnica de cinematicas dibujadas sobre actores reales, chirria un poco hoy en dia.

El juego transcurre a bordo de un tren y toda la trama se va a desarollar en apenas cinco vagones, Si bien la premisa puede parece muy arriesgada el juego lo resuelve con solvencia gracias a la trama, los personajes y la mecanica de juego. Apenas tendremos inventario y apenas tendremos que interactuar con el entorno. La mecanica jugable de The Last Express es bien distinta. Aqui se trata de estar en el momento justo en el lugar justo para actuar en consecuencia y sobre todo hablar mucho con los personajes.

Una mecanica jugable que es el alma del juego. Aqui el enemigo final es el tiempo porque el tren esta vivo y los acontecimientos transcurren a tiempor real. Depende de donde estemos oiremos una conversacion, presenciaremos un suceso o podremos actuar si es necesario. Asi de simple...y asi de desquiciante. Desquiciante porque el juego nos pone muchas trampas que acaban con la muerte del protagonista y porque muchas veces no sabremos que hacer. Pero poco a poco, iremos relacionando sucesos a su debido tiempo para salir airosos.

Una trama exotica y unos personajes a la par estan mas que bien. En una Europa a punto de entrar en la Primera Guerra Mundial, el Orient Express es un crisol de nacionalidades e intereses politicos que el juego sabe explotar muy bien para presentarnos una aventura con tesoros, asesinatos, combates, agentes secretos y un final a la altura de una buena novela de espias.

Una pena que sea tan corta. Cuando mas empieza a divertir es cuando llega el final y uno se queda con ganas de mas.

Muy recomendable para completistas del genero de las aventuras, nostalgicos y amantes de lo exotico en general.

Todo el mundo debería jugar a The Last Express. Es cierto que su apartado gráfico no ha envejecido particularmente bien, pero la sensación de que cada uno de los pasajeros del Orient Express está vivo y llevando a cabo su propio viaje lo compensa con creces. Historia, personajes, escenarios, banda sonora y puzles, además, ayudan a crear una aventura memorable. Una de esas experiencias únicas que ningún amante del medio debería obviar.

Released in 1997 during the final stages of the golden age of point-and-click adventures, the game was eventually a commercial failure and out of print nearly a year later. It was extremely expensive to make at the time, and a lot of effort was made to make it as historically authentic and convincing as possible. They even found an old abandoned Orient Express stowed away for 50+ years on a rail yard somewhere in Athens giving them first hand sources to make the legendary train come to life.

The game itself in a nutshell is a murder mystery. You have received a telegram from your friend Tyler Whitney to meet him on the train to take a journey from Paris to Jerusalem, as he has found something that might interest him there. Unfortunately the protagonist misses the train thanks to unforeseen circumstances with the law, and the only thing Tyler is greeted with is patrolling police on the lookout. Still that doesn’t stop the protagonist from boarding the train thanks to a friend and her motorcycle. On board you are free to explore the train, but your first task is to reunite with your friend whom should be waiting in his compartment. As you open the door you are met his mutilated and clawed up body. Determined to find out what happened you hide his body, take his identity ready to seek out and find the killer of your friend.

What makes this game so unique and not like anything you have ever previously played is how the whole game is played in real time. The clock is always ticking on the Orient Express and you have both passengers and crew going about their own things no matter if you’re there to catch them in the act or not. By making it this way you never feel like the game is tailor made for you. Just sitting in the smoking car eavesdropping as the passengers babble on might give you important information or clues to your case or impertinent discussions about anything 1914 related topics or just ordinary daily life stuff - which is still very interesting mind you thanks to some of the most realistic and deepest characters I’ve ever seen in a video game. Never have I played a game with this level of historical authenticity, you are immediately immersed in this game and convinced that you are a passenger on the Orient Express on the eve of World War 1.

Being in real time you will obviously miss tons clues, discussions, dialogue and events the first times playing it. Every time I come back to this game I always find new and undiscovered information. You are of course still able to rewind or fast forward the game at your leisure if you feel like experimenting with different routes. The game features a bunch of endings and only the most determined will make it all the way to Constantinople and find out the truth about the fate of his friend.

I highly recommend this game for any fans of point-and-click adventures who wants to try something different. It contains a compelling story, excellent characters and great voice acting who all speaks in their natural language; may it be Russian, English, German, Serbian, Arabian or French. The graphics are cartoony, but very stylish – I think it fits great for this game. All the characters are based off real actors who were mo-capped into the game so it still contains a very realistic look despite having cartoony colours.

Pocos títulos pueden ofrecer una experiencia tan única e inmersiva como The Last Express. Con una propuesta revolucionaria en su tiempo y aprovechando la última oleada de aventuras gráficas de los años 90, el creador de Prince of Persia, Jordan Mechner, lanzó un videojuego animado con rotoscopia, calcando los movimientos de los actores y de los escenarios, poniéndonos contra las cuerdas en un misterio que se desarrolla en tiempo real dentro del mítico Orient Express en 1914. Por si esto fuera poco, el videojuego se adelantó también en la interacción narrativa, contratando un elenco internacional (los pasajeros) que se comunican contigo o entre ellos en español, francés, ruso, alemán, árabe o inglés, dando a su vez una sensación viva a cada vagón, donde permanentemente están ocurriendo eventos, desengaños, cotilleos o pactos secretos que obviamente tendremos que desvelar.

La historia es corta, pero está a la altura de la propuesta, podría perfectamente ser otro libro más de Agatha Christie, o tal vez un guion perdido de Alfred Hitchcock. El contexto de la Primera Guerra Mundial es atrayente, da pie a espionajes y a choques entre los zaristas, los anarquistas, los nacionalistas serbios, los comerciantes alemanes, los tibios anglosajones o los agentes del imperio Austro-Húngaro. Y en medio de todo este jaleo político, cómo no, habrá un asesinato en el que nos veremos involucrados desde el minuto 1.

Los diálogos son brillantes y mantienen la tensión definiendo con precisión cada personaje, los puzzles presentan un reto digno, aunque consistan más en saber escuchar y ubicarse en el lugar y el momento apropiados que en utilizar items. Por último, destacaría también la inclusión de unos quick time events bien aplicados a las partes enfocadas en la acción o los enfrentamientos. Por si no ha quedada clara mi postura, lo reafirmo, un título recomendadísimo, una joya que consiguió juntar mecánicas y detalles como nunca antes se había hecho y que a día de hoy sigue dando unas cuantas lecciones sobre cómo contar una historia teniendo en cuenta tanto al personaje principal como al jugador, rompiendo los límites narrativos y los formatos ¿Es una película animada, es una aventura gráfica, es una visual novel de misterio? Es todo eso y mucho más.

The Last Express is a classic adventure game with a riveting story and brilliant atmosphere, it is perhaps my favourite story told in a mystery adventure rivalled only by some of the LucasArts classics.

I've played through this game multiple times over the last decade and I always enjoy the experience, it's like watching an excellent mystery movie, with interesting narrative and likeable characters and conversations which stick with you even after the game concludes.

However.

DotEmu has sacrificed what made this game a 'must have' in any collection, marred the game play with tool tips and icons which ruin the atmosphere of the game.

Sure, it plays in a higher resolution, and has compatibility with newer operating systems, but in the process DotEmu seem to have removed sound effect files such as the bustling wind from the carriage windows when they're opened.

I know it seems silly to nitpick on such minor details, but these minor nuances are what made me fall in love with this game.

Back on the subject of tool tips, the achievement icons that pop up in the middle of the screen when cinematic are playing.
And these can't be turned off. Not at all.
There is no option to turn off achievement or character bio/unlock popups, and they linger on-screen for up to 10 seconds.

The inclusion of (but to merit the ability to disable) tutorials is an insult to this game. Sorry you had to take the time to write them into the game, sadly they don't scream "GOLD EDITION" when the original title was a test of wits and observation skills, rather than telling you that the person you needed to talk to was currently having breakfast and you should annoy them.

I wouldn't recommend this VERSION of The Last Express solely that there are better, unadulterated versions available from other distributors, and simply put the term GOLD EDITION only exists because of a unlockables screen, which ultimately ruins the experience.

If the above could be toggled on/off or even removed, or even a purist setting, which disables on-screen prompts and hints, I would instantly regard this as the best version of the game available.

Adoro este juego desde que salio en 1997 y aun conservo la version original, con su cajota de carton. Pero esta version es un autentico desastre.... bugs en los efectos de sonido (a veces desaparecen canales de audio secundarios) y bugs en la interfaz que a veces te obliga a salir del juego....

Recomiendo el juego original aunque es dificil ya de conseguir, de todas formas ha envejecido mal el juego, pero hace 21 años era una delicia con su increible doblaje al español.

A murder of a friend in The Orient Express, combined with a thriller based on the preambules of WWI.
Many characters to discover ant interact, misteries to solve, in a brilliant gameplay, in wich every decision you choose, means for the succesfull of your journey.

This is a re-release of the lates 90s game, so do not expect a marvelous graphics, anyways the game is pretty damn beautiful and had a pretty good time playing it.

Price is ridicolous, an as i said, if you like this kind of games, you should buy it, you will not regret it.

I love this game. One of my all time favorites. This version is unfortunately broken. Issues I've noticed in the first hour of playing are: Missing sound effects and sounds that sound worse than the original somehow (open a window on a moving train and theres suddenly silence, all ambiet noise gone. close the window and hear the train again) , Buggy cursor that wont change context (always stuck on left arrow or turn around for example), and also there are some strange resolution issues.

Now even if all that were fixed I can't honestly say that the "improvements" add that much to the game. It's pretty much the same game as before but with more (annoying) popups and hints.

If you're looking to revisit this game or just now discovering it, know that this version is a mess and that 2 years after its release it still has a seriously amatuerish and hacked together feel. I guess it's fairly cheap though, so thats something....

The Last Express is a very unique game. When i played it for the first time it was kind of hard for me to understand the gameplay mechanics and how everything works but when i've got it, it became a really good game.

This game is a like an early attempt of making interactive movie-like game which became more popular recently. It plays like an interactive movie combined with point&click style gameplay. And on top of that it has one really interesting but very stressful mechanic - time never stops.

This is a train mystery game. Everything happens in the train and you must learn what is happening and uncover the mysterious murder. You need to interact with other characters, question them, explore the train, get some items and try not to die. Yes you can die because of bad decisions. Speaking about decision, they affect other characters and their behavior. You will need to be extremely careful to not ruin everything.
You're always under pressure because the clock is ticking and everything changes on the train. Characters move to other wagons or disappear. There are also some quick time events. Overall it felt like this game was ahead of its time.

Graphically the game is simply beautiful. It was released in 1997. You hear? This is a game from the last century and it still looks great. Characters are nicely drawn, action scenes are wonderfully animated and characters in general are nicely done.

I definitely recommend this game. The price is ridiculous and this is a real classic. If you love mystery and puzzle solving this is a game for you.
