So why should I get this instead of Minecraft?
Title says it all, I'm interested in minecraft-like games but why should I get this one over MC? What is different?

So you want people to justify YOU spending YOUR own money on something that only YOU can decide upon?

Also known as "reviewing". I'd also like some of that.

If you're into survival and exploring randomly generated worlds, get minecraft. Blockland just cannot compete with MC on that level. BL has some mods for zombies and other creatures that simulate a survival sitation, but it's more of a roleplay, really. And we don't have (good) random worlds.

But BL excels as a building game. MC isn't even competition on that level. BL has much better tools for building advanced and good-looking creations, not much different from what you would build with legos. Blockland also has a ton of addons that include vehicles and guns. Deathmatches and races are therefore a vital part of BL, unlike in MC.

The choice is yours: survival/exploration or creation/versatile gamemods

How about getting both?

Two very different games. You can do stuff in Blockland that you can only dream about in Minecraft and vice versa.

Do you compare BL to vanilla MC or Tekkit or other advanced mods?

Not in like in Minecraft. There are a few player-made terrain generators but they are fairly limited in comparison to Minecraft. Blockland really doesn't have any randomly generated content at all. At it's core the game simply Legos online with Garry's Mod mechanics.

There have been roleplaying adventure servers but they aren't particularly common.

Blockland looks all Bling and no Zing But Minecraft has no Bling but a S**t load of Zing. Just youtube Minecraft builds or Minecraft in genral... Minecraft been there done that Blockland just a shiney clone..

so if I'm into the RPG/survival parts, I should buy MC, while if I want the sandbox mode, I should buy this one right?

I think I'll look into this since I'm mostly interested in creating stuff in sandbox mode.

Blockland is not a clone of Minecraft, mr smartass.
Blockland was here BEFORE Minecraft.
Minecraft release: May 17, 2009 (alpha)
Blockland release: November 2004

Oh and, Minecraft has more survival stuff, while Blockland is more about building, fighting and racing. You can also create Blockland servers with one click, for free. Minecraft requires you to portforward, use Hamachi or buy a server from a host.

Modded MC doesn't really any new building blocks to the game. You still have low-res cubes that don't allow much detail. Since BL has legoesque bricks, it is much easier to build whatever you want and make it look good.

Something else that is worth mentioning: BL supports a kind of "programming language" (Events) that allow you to create interactive stuff, much like redstone in Minecraft. Every brick can hold up to 100 lines of "code", so you can create a lot of cool stuff. I'm not extremely good at Eventing, but I built this piano that plays songs by itself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyApPGLZCq0

Exactly.

Can you have characters that actually look decent? Minecraft has a decent skin system and with some mods that allow you to edit proportions and such also with custom armor from addons, you can make a character that looks pretty ok.
I think the Blockland characters look really neat. There is a drawback though. You have a set list of face and chest decals that you can use. You can make your own face textures but they will only be visible to you. In order for other players to see them they also need to download your custom face texture add-on.

There is also a list of default equipment you can put on your character such as a peg leg, pirate hat, or a cape. Some servers have add-ons that add additional equipment like a parrot or a Deadmau5 head but these are only usable on those servers.

Is stuff like this possible to build in BL?
I'm not saying I wanna do this right away :) But this kinda "building for the sake of building" is what I'm interested in.

No not really. That whole thing is far too large for Blockland to handle but you could make smaller parts of that. You can only place down 256000 bricks.

well Thankyou for the answers :)
I think a better comparison would be Blockland Vs Garry's Mod, due to similar styles of gameplay and the focus on creativity over any real overeaching story or goals.
If you like minecraft, guncraft, ace of spades etc. then you'll like this too!
