Punkbuster
I am getting kicked from multiplayer games by Punkbuster, I've tried updating it (a recommended option) but it says that I do not have access and fails to update. Is this because of Steam?

You may need to update punkbuster

Thats the problem, I can't. It says I don't have sufficient rights or something similar, I think Steams not allowing me or something

I'm running into the same issue. Ran pbsetup (as an Administrator), selected Battlefield 2 from the drop down and successfully updated all files. Also uninstalled and reinstalled the pnkbstrA & B services, still no luck. Disabled anti-virus and windows firewall, no luck.

I also unchecked the "overlay" option in Steam, but no luck. As soon as I connect to a server, I get booted due to pnkbstrB.exe not being able to communicate, and there's a reference to the pnkbstrk.sys file too.

After reading several threads from google search results, I am out of options. Sucks that I bought this game and (as of right now) it looks like I won't be able to play it. Does anyone else have suggestions to fix this?

Same stuff for me pnkbstrA & B, and even invalid CD KEY! Dont know how hte last one was posible. I've followed the guide on here and no luck. :( I just bought BF2 on steam on sale, I had it on disk back in 2005 when it came. I had never had any trouble with it but it was on a XP OS. So maybe its just windows 8?

try uninstalling/deleting bf2 from steam redownload/install and during the install it will or after it i cant remember wich it will ask you if you want to install punkbuster make sure you select yes then it runs its own little check and then update it using pbsetup.try it nothing to lose quite a quick download with it only being a small game.

Uhh, even after uninstalling from Steam, then re-downloading thte game files I'm still getting the pnkbstrB.exe errors. I can connect to a match, and within ~5 seconds I get booted.

After uninstall/reinstall using the punkbuster service files (www.evenbalance website), I'm still getting the same errors. I'm running Windows 8.1 32-bit (yeah, I know, it's 32-bit). Anyone else able to get this game to work using Win 8.1???

I'm dying to jump in and start playing, and the single-player isn't cutting it! Would appreciate anyone's help/ideas/suggestions.

It was a matter of making sure it was updated & that it was running for me "pnkbstrB" had not been turned on. Hope this helps other people

- 1 PLZ utilise "searching motor" in the Steam forum, many of your problems are resolved...

- 2 Update manually Punkbuster : http://www.punkbuster.com/

- 3 The Steam overlay must remain closed, so be aware of your attention of detail to know

- 4 If you are Administrator in your system and have no problem with antivirus/firewall config, no problems at all normally

- 5 After cheched all of this, if you still kicked, there is a last problem which is strange, go into
Windows search, write "Msconfig" disable some cores of you processor in the advanced setup page, then select only 2 or 1 after test, restart your computer and you go to Battlefield 2 !!

- 6 The last was a problem for me too since my recent pc, but strangely i have reactived for some games my 8 cores, and retested that, and now it work fine without kick/crash of this, which happened generally after 15/20 minutes of gameplay.

I hope you enjoy one of the most intense/tactical/arcadish/immersif FPS on PC, the true world of gaming shooter...

It was to do with my anti-virus. Punkbuster is adware for some reason?
