Oculus+Assetto = Wheel doesn't work
Hey there :)

Maybe somebody can help me out? Just bought an Oculus Rift and my Thrustmuster TX doesn't work...in fact it does work, up until Assetto is loaded onto the Rift.

It is really strange because in the AC Launcher I see that my Wheel is recognized and I loaded my profile. In 2D no problem and when I play on a monitor.

In VR though - no such luck. I click the wheel in the left hand corner and want to drive...not even the XBOS Controller does work. It recognizes some Keayboard inputs, that is all. I guess something is blocking the input?

I found nothing on the interwebs that could help...

Did you use the wheel wizard (or whatever it's named) and save the set up ?
If the TX is not one of the officially supported wheels you must go through the setup wizard !

Jup. My setup works. Only in VR the wheel doesn't work. I have also Fanatec Pedals those work. I'm pretty stumped. Bought the Oculus for Sims. :/

Did you alow "unkown sources" in the Oculus general settings ?
I am a Rifter and have swapped between 3 different wheel setups, never had a problem such as yours.
Good luck...

EDIT : Check your usb ports.
Not much help, just trying...

Thank you very much! I found the error...

...typical User error. Somehow I had to assign everything again and had overlooked it, since up until then everything worked.

I used the configurator beforehand to get it all started... but after that I had to assign everything, which I overlooked.. wheel, pedals, shifting, everything. Now it works and after 8 laps in Brands Hatch I want to puke, but it was incredible!

Go faster...be clean !

changing FOV and FPS settings can help with motion sickness, regarding your wheel you need to use the same usb port every time or you will need to keep re-assigning everything unfortunately.

@Boneboys :D I only had one crash at the very beginning. The size relation awareness through VR really helps to drive clean. The ups and downs in Brands are hard to cope with, ugh, but yeah, after my pause I will drive faster ^^

@Talke Toaster
For real? I know these problems from my flightsims. Thanks. Good to know.

Yeah they're the biggest causes of motion sickness, I don't use VR but some games just naturally give me really bad sickness after half hour or so on a TV screen if they have a dodgy FOV setting. FPS is a massive factor for sickness in VR too, so it's worth shooting for a higher, smoother FPS rather than a lower, jerky one.

There are also some apps that can be used to prevent it with VR such as Real Head Motion, which I hear is pretty good. http://magicfr.changeip.net/RealHeadMotion/RealHeadMotion.php

You will probably get your "VR legs" with more use. At least that's how it worked for me. After that initial breaking in period it'll probably become 2nd nature. The nice thing about VR with driving sims is you're only replicating what you would be doing in reality - sitting down while moving. It gets a little queasier when you start simulating movement and you don't have a fixed reference point in front of you like you do in a car.

Very interesting.

I plan to drive every day until I get used to. How long did it take for all of you until you could stand it?

No time at all when racing, the only game that sometimes makes me lose my balance is Onward but that is setling down as well.
Doing barrel rolls in DCS may, as in real life give a sense of vertigo but that also sorted itself out quick enough.

There is no hard rule concerning "motion sickness", two of my real life friends suffer more than I even though one has been Rifting since day one.

HINT : "Turning into the bend" may help, both in flight & racing sims.

Just drove a 30 minute race (321T/Hockenheim - racing a 70ies Formula 1 car in VR is a dream come true) and I came out okay. Didn't expect that after yesterday, but I guess I am on a good way. After some rounds I haven't thought much auf dizzyness, I was just racing and enjoying myself.

Sorry, but I still have to gush over VR. It is sooo awesome. And my car handling improves so much, too. Watched the replay on my monitor and I drove really precise. This is a total game changer. The feeling when you look around in your "real" car or being stuck behind another car and overtaking... the thrill. OH MY GOD!

I just hope Assetto Corsa gets more F1 Mods, maybe with complete fields? Luckily rfactor 2 has VR now and a very good 1975 F1 Mod.

just a quick comment about motion sickness. make sure you are hitting your target 90fps, any dip below that will bring on motion sickness without you noticing till its far too late. when in your car move your mouse all the way right and you will see a list of 'apps' you are looking for 'render stats' and have it somewhere you can see it when driving, then lower graphics settings as needed until it stops dipping below 90/89.99fps.

if motion sickness is a problem i suggest ginger, as in root ginger. ppl laugh when i say it but honestly it really works.
http://www.motion-sickness-guru.com/ginger-for-motion-sickness.html

as for turning graphics options down, a lot of people turn post processing off altogether cos its such a resource ♥♥♥♥♥ and then spend those resources elsewere (super sampling mostly, which is done by editing a .ini file in your documents) but that all depends on your rig and your preferences of what you prefer the image to look like.

and if you are still going 'oooooo' 'aaaaaa' over vr i would recommend taking either the lotus type 49 or the ktm x-box round nords, much wooow. or there is a special event with 2 la ferraris and 2 mclaren p1s, seeing that blue flame jumping out the back of that p1 while you hand on for dear life is a bit special n all.

@ivor_bign Are 45 FPS when I am accustomed? Any experience? I honestly don't know how mauch FPS I had in my session today, bit it felt good and I didn't feel the exhaustion which I had the last 3 days, but now I am curious.

Great suggestions! I think I will try the KTM - that thing never did much vor me in my monitor setup, but now I guess it will be different.

Woohooo.

@fiese Fee
:))))

PS: I need glasses an get cheap new ones that I can wear with the Rift, so I don't know..can you read the menus? I don't know how to set up the car when I really don't see any numbers anywher. Do yu guys your setup outside of VR and put the Rift only afterwards on?

45fps is nowhere near what you need to be getting mate. it might seem ok with only a slight stutter as you move your head around but its that stutter that will end your vr session and leave you feeling like crap.

as i said when you are sat in your car and able to drive you need to move your mouse pointer over to the right and find the 'render stats' app and leave it open where you can see it while you drive. just keep an eye on the FPS it should stay rock steady at 90/89.99fps if it doesnt your graphics are set too high.

about glasses, the oculus dk2 came with an extra pair of lenses for ppl that require glasses. i dont know but maybe your cv1 did too? if not they will have a solution (like being able to wind the face plate out to make room for your glasses)

as for setting the car up, you do that when sat in your car but before you drive, just under the steering wheel you click to start driving there is a spanner, set your car up in there
