Verdun
Snapshot of a Large Verdun Playergroup II. May 16, 2017.
Back in February I posted a discussion thread about a large and active Verdun group, which was: http://steamcommunity.com/app/242860/discussions/0/133258092248745122/. I remain an administrator for the group and it remains active, but our numbers have since grown. Community moderator LV|Ironstorm767 suggested around the time of the first thread that I revisit the then 354 member formation when and if it ever reaches 500 members. Since our numbers are now 502, I will touch on many of the topics presented in the previous thread and update it with the latest information.
Verdun Group x64 is a public group formed last December and is open to everyone with interest in private matches using the 64 player template. No great experience nor notable skill with the game is required, but we strive for fair matches with such features as friendly fire on and the new private match command which can level all squads to a set quality, so we do challenge the members to try their honest best. Basically, x64 is a "fun" group and its membership includes all kinds of players' talents and abilities spread all over the globe. We have been doing two matches per week set with the 64 player template, one for each of the EU and the US servers and the membership has obviously grown since the last discussion thread. Despite the good news, concerns exist which might have implications for the larger Verdun community.
One way of approaching this discussion involves breaking down the group into subsections based upon career hours with Verdun. I will do this and note February numbers in brackets, but keep in mind that 45% [46%] of Group x64 have at least 100 career hours with the game, while the other 55% [54%] have 99 hours or less. Also note that about 17% of the membership have private profiles, so my raw numbers are approximations for the 502 member group, using the information from public profiles to project to the full 502.
Captain. (500 hours or more with Verdun). Currently 10% [9%] or about 50 members of x64 have 500 or more career hours with Verdun. For those 50, 83% [92%] have played at least moments of the game over the last two weeks, so about 42 of our captains have seen recent Verdun action.
Lieutenant. (250 to 499 hours). Currently 13% or about 65 members of x64 have between 250 and 499 career hours with Verdun. For those 65, 79% [87%] have played at least moments of the game over the last two weeks, so about 50 of our lieutenants have seen recent Verdun action.
Sergeant. (100 to 249 hours). Currently 22% or about 110 members of x64 have between 100 and 249 career hours with Verdun. For those 110, 60% [68%] have played at least moments of the game over the last two weeks, so about 67 of our sergeants have seen recent Verdun action.
Corporal. (50 to 99 hours). Currently 18% or about 90 members of x64 have between 50 and 99 career hours with Verdun. For those 90, 37% [60%] have played at least moments of the game over the last two weeks, so about 33 of our corporals have seen recent Verdun action.
Private First Class. (20 to 49 hours). Currently 21% or about 105 members of x64 have between 20 and 49 career hours with Verdun. For those 105, 32% [36%] have played at least moments of the game over the last two weeks, so about 34 of our private first class have seen recent Verdun action.
Private. (19 hours or less). Currently 16% [16%] or about 82 members of x64 have 19 career hours or less with Verdun. For those 82, 16% [14%] have played at least moments of the game over the last two weeks, so about 12 of our privates have seen recent Verdun action.
What might one draw from all this?
1. The veterans are not leaving, although they have been less active based upon the fall from 92% to 83% for recent participation rate.
2. New players are still joining, with active participation rate about the same as before.
3. Except for the very newest members of the Verdun community, partipation rate over the last two weeks has fallen for all classes since the February numbers. The most severe drop was seen from those with between 50 and 99 career Verdun hours, but perhaps some of that affect is muted as I assume that my group is evolving and that some of x64 in February have since been "promoted" to a more active career hour class.
4. It remains true that retaining newer members is key. I pointed out that 55% of x64 have 99 hours or less with the game, but that section constitutes only 33% of those in my group who have put in any time with Verdun over the last two weeks.
Footnote.
According to recent Steamcharts, Verdun averaged 282.4 players in February and has averaged 253.7 players over the last 30 days, or a drop of about 10% since I did my most recent snapshot, so participation rate for my group was probably affected like other Verdun communities. Additionally, X-Box was introduced since the previous snapshot and it appears to have between 200 and 300 players on a regular basis, perhaps also affecting the numbers for PC Verdun.

^ Hopefully this will put a stop to all the 'Verdun is dead/this game has no players ect.' threads
