By the time I was learning to create sprite on a Commodore 64C when I was 6, I envisioned a day when a game like DCUO might be possible - though never imagined the MMO element then.
The first time I logged in, I had no idea what it was, or that it was coming - I just logged in and was amazed at what it was.
I had an "Oh My God They Built It" moment. I was 34 by then.
My daughter and I love this game. Pros and Cons aside - to little content today has a moral compass built into it the way the superhero genre does. It is good for people.
Like other people said, it's fun if you play with a friend or get into a league to help you out. That's how I got to cr 87 the second time i came back to the game in dec. The first time i played is when the game went f2p and i only got up to t2 content before i felt the game didnt offer enough to keep me playing, so i quit.
I sense a lot of hating here.
Maybe you think I am saying that DC Universe created the MMO genre. To clarify - I am not saying that at all. There have been a TON of MMO's - just none that I found compelling. From MUD's to WoW - I never found it interesting. I'm not into Tolkein so much that the books were not enough and I want to be an elf, or whatever.
Sure, the modern Unreal Engine it is rendered in is beautiful. Yes, it is fascinating to see 70+ years of comic writing get intergrated into a single Universe with very few compromises (for example, Bat Girl and Oracle both exist in the game, but in the comics are the same person at different points of their life/mythos).
This game was a first, though. The DC Comics, with all the literature and iconic superheroes and villians behind it, was merged into an MMO. That was never done before.
Technology-wise - not groundbreaking. Artistically - groundbreaking. The technology behind it existed prior, yes. The technology is needed to facilitate the finished product, yes.
This game is so much better than others like it, even though those games also had similiar themes and the same technology underpinning it. Games like City Of Heroes, and Champions Online existed before DC Universe.
But they didn't have the heroes everyone knows - and the rich 70 years of writing that made it great - integrated into those games. Frankly, they didn't have artists making as much out of the 3D engines as did the SOE design team, as well.
It is the moral content of the DC Universe merged with the technology that I forseen coming since I was a child - that combination - that "they finally built".
Then again I never saw much interest in obtaining battle suits to show off (Just looked at the wiki), personally I just came to the personal conclusion that wearing giant mechanical suits of armour wasn't very super hero/villain-ish at all. (With the exception of a few like Ares) obviously it is difficult to keep the balance of a DC universe, and simply another MMO universe, and this is one of those instances where it slips through a lot more as MMO content and it loses its DC immersion. Regardless its clear to me that it simply seemed to be aimed at players who do take it to that next level of an MMO. Hence the legendary requirements.
It isn't that I'm saying its not worth it, however personally I'm just not interested in it as an MMO enough to pay $15 a month for those next level aims. I'm a DC fan and yes I do have certain interest in MMO's, but this level of content seems to be much more aimed at MMO fans than DC fans (In my personal opinion, I know someone will argue with this and I probably won't blame you for it.) That's not saying for what it is as a F2P or premium that it isn't a good game though, it combines two great themes and to be able to actually combine and accumalate all of what is put together and make it work is a real achievement in itself.
But that next level isn't for me I guess.
The suits themselves give you stat boosts. Completed suits give you feats that, in turn, give you more stat boosts as well. You can adopt the visual style with the suit, but all visuals are optional.
The best tank I know in the game is Cosmic War - he is CR98 Ice and is still a free player - but he did have friends and patience to pull it off as a free player. Great guy though.
I'm lifetime Legendary myself. It was $200 as a one time fee - no subscription afterward. They do not offer that since going to the F2P model though.
If you do ever play look me up and say hi!
