how to play dlc?
when i downloaded the dlc i went onto the main menu and tthere wasnt an option toplay whistleblower so i clicked new game assuming that it would ask which outlast you want to play but it just went onto the main game?

Go to options and then back to the main menu. Then you can choose "New GAme: Whistleblower"

Do you installed the last update/patch from Outlast (April 30th 2014)? This update install the support for Whistleblower DLC. After you installed the patch you can choose "New Game: Whistleblower" in the Outlast main menu.
