Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut

"The 'best version' of Deus Ex: Human Revolution features improved graphics" Yeah, no it doesn't

It's an old point but i'd like this to be a definitive conclusion that it infact features DOWNGRADED graphics.

(Minus known texture issues and other crap like the color filter)

The Director's cut uses much lower precision/resolution Depth of Field and HDR Effects. So much so that there are crazy amounts of undersampling artifacts in both effects.

Comparisons of 4 different scenarios (Both in DX9 at max settings minus AA)

In the first shot look at the glow around the celing lights. It looks natural and smooth in the original. In the Director's cut it's precision has been cut back significantly starving it of the samples it needs for a HQ and accurate effect. You can see visible blurred stair steps that represent the undersampling going on.

The same is true of shot #4 showing the Depth of Field. In motion these effects flicker back and forth constantly resulting in very ugly effects. Something not present in the original game.

Also, nice avatar you have there.

The screens slap the DC away.
Here's another comparison showing the HDR Buffer scaling with resolution , the only way to make it remotely visually good looking

Hi - I am playing on a $600.00 ASUS 3D capable 120 mghz monitor and am very happy with the game visuals and all.
And this is with a basic HP desktop and a 550 Ti video card.

I can see your point however.

Thanks for the info.

Off Topic: Speaking of "Bonkers" our theatre coined the term "Bonkersburg" back in the late 60's in the St. Louis, MO. area.
I actually prefer the graphics in DC; lights do not glow that much in real life, pre-DC had too much of this yellow/orange filter going on (yes, I know that was the effect they were aiming for, but it needed to tone down a bit), enviromental objects do not stand out too much in DC (picture two, the cupboard to the right was too bright).

The only thing I did not like was how they blurred the background so much when in conversation.

IMHO, the original's graphics look much better overall. Because real humans actually built it from scratch. The Director's Cut team could not have done that. The Director's Cut team did a high-level remastering of the graphics. That destroyed most of the work that was done during the game's original development. The result is that game looks worse overall and is missing the composition in visual level design created by the game's artists. However, Director's Cut instead has some scenic visuals that are hit-and-miss but were sometimes look more natural. I still think the original screenshots look more visually impressive and better put together and they should, because a lot of work went into crafting that version of the game's visuals.

I agree wholeheartedly. Would be good to have the visuals of Deus Ex Human Revolution with the extra features of the Directors Cut. Oh well.
yeah

I didn't upgrade because I really like the yellow vibe. Although it's a superficial thing I think it works well with the setting. I didn't know there were other significant differences so I'm surprised that the new one looks so different. It actually looks a bit fuzzy and there's less depth to the scene (first shot in particular is striking). Thanks for posting.

It gave the game an unique look, but wish they didn't have to overdo it.
The thing that bugs me the most about the DC is how they managed to get the lighting and shading backwards on the NPCs. Now when you look at them they all appear as if someone is standing behind them shining a flashlight on their backs, creating a glowing outline around their body while their faces are all dark and shadowed.
Bumped because they put it on sale again. This discussion will inform people that not only has the game gone 7 months abandoned without fixes to it's performance issues, it's graphical issues have not been fixed. It's still an inferior version and for many it's also unplayable.
Agreed.

Quick question:

Does it REPLACE the original game in your Steam library, or will you have both games listed? (I mean if you already own DXHR on Steam)

Thanks.
You have both. The original just isn't for sale anymore IIRC
