This is the closest I have come so far.
Gameplay is actually very similar to KB.
You move on an adventure map which you are free to roam.
There are both main quests and side quests.
When entering battle, you enter a hex-grid battlefield, and take turns just like in KB.
Obviously, you do not hire creatures, learn spells or search for crystals or runes in this game and your horse do not learn how to fly either.
Instead, you have a party of "somewhat common people" with different talents and theese folks are improved over time by using gained experience.
Your party is not set in stone and so members will join, leave or die over time. How this plays out, is up to you.
Graphics is not gorgeous compared to KB, nor is the game engine as smooth as in KB.
I would have preferred to be able to zoom out more and for someone beeing used to the colorful world of KB, this game is ... green. All over.
The world map might feel dull at first for someone with a KB background.
The extra aspect in this game compared to KB is the "Camping"-concept. When you are out of moves, you will camp, and when doing so you will typically asign tasks to your party members. The optimal choices depends on your needs, terrain type, the health/morale of your party members, what stocks is needed and so on. You can even create objects and learn new techology while camping.
This makes for some interesting moments during the game.
For instance, you might suddenly find yourself dangerously low on food suplies, but your best hunter is injured and leaving him/her non-treated might make the wound worse or even kill the wounded, if in critical state.
The time concept is closer to HoMM-series than the KB-series here with days that repeat. There is no clock like in KB. During the night, you will simply camp.
Nontheless, you will encounter both daytime fights and night-fights.
If you can accept the fact that the world of this game is a real-life 1500 A.D -colonial world and not a KB fantasy-world, then you certainly should give it a try.
Combat here is pretty straining, though. I wish I could just generally skip it.
While I'm here, is there a hotkey to cycle between your dudes during the battle?
It'll randomly injure some of your followers (That you picked to go into battle), and the dialogue will assume you lost.
IIRC, F1-F6 cycles between your followers.
I don't consider the fight difficulty as the issue (even though the fight against the rebel at the mine was absolutely insane on normal difficulty), just that the combat is very tedious and the UI could be better.
I find the first turn of the battles a little boring, since the guns really dont shoot far so you will mostly have 6+8 characters running closer to each other in the beginning of the battle... but after that it gets interesting.
Scholar does seem kind of useless class in combat though... yet usefull in the tactical map. I kinda regret picking so many soldiers to my team, when I am alwayss using only 2.
You should really try out king's bounty for comparsion.
In KB your hero is moving around very smoothly and zoom and rotation of camera etc is smoother. You can also zoom out more.
Don't get me wrong. : "Expeditions: Conquistador" get's the job done.
It just that if you have lived in the KB-universe for several years and jumps into this game, the difference in smootness is instantly noticable.
I also don't approve of hidden Nazi references whenever the "good-bad" guys of Dark Side are mentioned.
