Another Workaround For Users w/ Avast!
So I got the game the time it came out, hoping to play it even after the positive reviews it was getting. However, everytime I was trying to open it, it crashed (like it has for so many of us) I did try many of the solutions that were mentioned here on the forums and they didn't work (aside from uninstalling Avast!, which was my last ditch effort to get it to work)

But I tried a different approach. Instead, I went to Unity's website to see if they've had the same problems (which they did) and a user posted a link to the Avast! forums about it, which had a very interesting solution. I tried it, and so far it's working.

In Avast!, go to Settings -> Troubleshooting -> disable Hardware-Assisted Virtualization -> Reboot your machine.

For what it seems, Unity and Avast! conflict in that matter, causing Gone Home to crash. Give this a shot, and let's see if many of us can get the game to work with this

Wow, thank you, BasherColson702! This sounds like really useful information for people experiencing this crash, so that they don't have to uninstall the software.

It works! Thanks BasherColson702!
BasherColson702 should get some kind of medal or prize. The game works great and I don't have to uninstall Avast.

I use avast and was having these problems. I followed the advice on these forums (disabling avast, trying to run the 32bit version) but I was still getting a black screen, and the blue spinner of doom. (When running the 32bit version I was getting audio, but nothing else).

I fopund that Zone Alarm was hiding in the background, asking if it was ok for Gone Home to contact the interne. I went looking for the white-list to add the game, but instead found Game Mode in the Tools tab. I activated this, and set it to allow all alerts (dangerous, I know) and now everything's working!

I hope this helps some of you.

Doesn't seem to work for me. I've also tried disabling Avast, still nothing.
Any thoughts?

I'm having the same issue here. Tried all these work arounds, and literally nothing is working. Still the same crash.

I think my issue with ZoneAlarm was it showed a popup to check if I wanted to allow GH through the firewall, but that was hidden beneath the game screen.

Do you have any other forewalls running that might be doing this?

Thanks! Disabling Hardware-Assisted Virtualization worked for me!
