Speedrunning La-Mulana
Metroidvanias in general make good speedrun games. La-Mulana is no exception! If anyone is interested in speedruns of this game, or in running the game yourself, here are some helpful links:

I eagerly await competition. :]

I wish people would stop spamming their youtube channels. It's happening more and more atm and it's getting out of control.
I hardly doubt this qualifies and last I checked this is the first instance of anyone doing it on this board so stop your complaining.

I'd love to give you some competition, DeliciousPi, but I've still got a long ways left to go (I think my best time back on the Playism version was something like 3-4 hours, and I've gotten rustier since)
I think I commented on that video a while back - I don't have any video capture software but I'm off your pace by about 10 minutes of in-game time. Always something to shape up, right? I did notice as well - when you go to swim up the pipes in the tower, without the anchor you can just hit the button once & then the current pulls you up super quick. Not much savings, but every little bit counts.
Awesome, didn't know it would work like that.
Though I should say to be completely accurate - the current doesn't flow up for every pipe, so you still have to do some swimming, just not as much.
I LOVE your speedrun! It has given me alot of tips that I use on my own playthroughs. That inculdes skipping Zu.

Rude much dude? It's not really that bad.

Posting La-Mulana videos to the La-Mulana community hub is pretty much exactly what it's for.

Sweet video, OP.
Anyone playing the Steam version won't have the advantage of the glitches and differences in the early builds. 1.4.4.2 (Steam release) in particular fixes the early Flail Whip glitch.
Thanks Akimaye, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

@Ragu
Ha, you're right. They didn't actually fix the physics glitch, but moved the pot you needed to glitch it half a tile over.

Removing early flail whip doesn't change the route by much actually. You drop by to pick it up once you get the Philosopher's Ocarina instead, and basically miss out on using it for the Tower of the Goddess sub-boss, Vimana.

I skipped getting the achor in my last run. But didn't notice a huge speed difference like your vid. If I mashed the button faster, then maybe it can work... but I don't want to damage my buttons.

Were you on rapid fire, or could this be something that was patched?
With the anchor skip, just hold down the jump button while in the pipe and you should rocket up. This should only work on the right side.
Ah! Gotcha! Thanks

Shouldn't the last version be considered in speedruns anyway?
I speedrun Dark Souls, and after a certain patch they fixed a skip that made you beat the game at the half-point, and people just adapted and moved on, rendering the old runs obsolete.

I guess 1.0 can always be a category like it is in ALTTP for example, but I don't see how it should be the focus when it comes to world records and such.
It really depends on what's popular with the people speedrunning the game. Most older console games require specific versions (such as 1.0 Metroid Prime) for speedrunning.

The glitch in question to get the early Flail Whip actually saves little time, so you can be competitive on any version. Basically, you warp back to Tower of the Goddess to pick it up after getting the Ocarina, then head off to Baphomet. You have some extra dialogue to read with the Philosopher to open it, but you don't have to worry about doing the glitch twice in the run.

The current update fixes the Early Flail Whip glitch, yeah. So you have to get the Flail Whip the normal way, meaning you solve the Tower of the Goddess to remove the statues, go to the Graveyard of the Giants, grab the Bombs on the way to Chamber of Birth to get the Woman Statue, impregnate it, get the Ocarina, then talk with the Philosopher to unlock the Flail Whip Room.

That said, even glitchless, it's still possible to conquer this game Any% in under 2 hours in-game timer Personal best time: 1:58:11 (I posted a screenshot up on my Steam Profile)
