When I started people leveled in qufim till 32-33 :P And you didn't even go there until mid 20's.
And citizens of windurst leveled in Buburimu rather then the dunes^^
Though all that did change pretty quickly to the paths of least resistence, by going to the jungles at 24 doing mandy's after qufim from 19-24. Ohh the great goblin trains back before mobs despawned at the zone, esp in Yhoator ^^ It could easily be a blood bath around the yuhtunga zone line for a good 10-15 minutes.
Now adays though, I goto the maze of shakhrami from 18-23 then korrolka tunnel until 40 (doing leeches from 28-40, excellent chaining there) and then off to Sea serpant grotto^^ (of course, I cheat and use the pages rather then directly off mobs themselves like the old days, but I skip aby.)

My favorite storyline tho would have to be WotG. The main story and the 3 nation's questlines were all well done.
I didn't do emperor much but I did go something like 1/35 on Mysticmaker Profblix. (Moldevite Earring)
The challenge that the game presented was both it's best and worst features. If someone tried to play this game back when it was released and wasn't willing to work with others, it was a miserable experience for them I'm sure. On the other hand, even if you actively sought teamwork-focused gameplay there were enough times where days would pass before you had the right mix of folks to accomplish something. (Looking at you PLD coffer!) BUT, when you finally got around to completing a milestone, you TRULY felt like you had accomplished something great.
No achievements, no flashy weapon sprites...just a constant cycle between all of the emotions on the spectrum. Too bad they don't make games like this anymore.
Sadly, I don't feel the game is worth playing anymore, with the release of the Abyssea expansions, all challenge was removed from the game. At the very least, when they removed the level caps on storyline missions, they could have leveled the mobs to match, but, they didn't.
And after the level cap was raised to 99, the quest Ark Angels didn't require a full alliance with a full wipe as part of the strategy.
If you've thought of returning.......don't. Why pay for a game that has no challenge when there are so many free to play games that offer just as little. The only things FFXI still has going for it are lengthy storylines and, imo, awesome soundtracks. Even going hardcore, you can't finish the main storylines in 4 hours like in Destiny. >.>
FFXI still has plenty of challange, just because Chains or promathia was uncapped long before aby even came out, doesn't mean the challange is gone. There's still plenty of challange. True it's not old challanges like what we got in the old days, but there's still challanges, plenty of things to go fight.
The game is played differently today for sure, it had to change to hold people and fit the times better, most of the player base can't spend 6 hours in the game at anyone time now.
But overall, it's still a fun enjoyable game you won't get in many places anymore. FFXI still has a lot going for it, the depth of lore, story, and amazing music is just a few of many things. For those who love it, it will always be home^^
But then I read your bragging like a butt sniffer about mpk'ing and realized there was no point.
The game is better off without you.
I don't think people complain that the game isn't as challenging as it used to be, only that the challenge has changed. I'm sure for the many generations that have come and gone that their little piece of FFXI are just as memorable.
Before, just simply getting from Lastok to Jeuno was an adventure. Getting a good party in Valk Dunes was rewarding. And, to stay on topic, the daunting tasks of trying to figure out Yuhtunga and Yhoater Jungle's are engrained forever. I'm sure there are equivalents to those 3 simple examples present today, but for the folks from the era where we ran the first benchmark video over and over again in anticipation for the game to release, the gameplay just doesn't have the same charm.
It seems the post I respoded to (the guy bragging about mpk-ing) has been removed. At any rate, I'm not disagreeing with you. I was also there "back in the day".
I remember the cap being 50. I remember being excited about the rlease of CoP. I also remember MPKs. It was an incredibly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing to do. Also, as a BST (back when NO ONE) played that job, mpk was annoying because anytime it happened, folks would do a search of the zone ande blame any BST that happened to be around.
Then SE decided to implement the "Ant-MPK patch", which totally broke how we played the job.
Anyway, I could go on and on, but yes, I agree, the game used to be much more difficult and team oriented and that created many great memories.
Today it's far more casual. The grand memories are a thing of the past. Ironically, the game being far more casual now is why I renewed my subscription. While I'll always have fond memories of the old FFXI, truth is, in today's world, that game would be shut down in a week.
