If I was to play Doom for the wads, should I get Doom 1 or 2, or will wads work with both?

Doom 2 has a bit more wads/mods than Doom, but if you get Doom 2 then you can't play the Doom 1 wads. (Unless you know how to tweak wads so they can run on the current game you have) Also, most wads use a sourceport so you should get something like Zdoom, Gzdoom, or zandronum.

Doom 2 seems to be the one you'll want if you had to choose. Doomseeker is a great place to find all sorts of wads that change from day to day. So you could install that first. Find what wads are on what servers and which version of doom it requires. You can even play test and give wad and mapmakers feedback on the right days.

DOOM II: Hell on Earth has wider PWAD (or patch WAD) support, 99.99% of downloaded WAD's are PWAD's so get DOOM II.

DOOM 1 got better music and levels design.
DOOM 1 got 4 episodes ( episode = collection of levels usually consists of eight levels, plus one secret level. ) u can chose ur favorite one before starting a game.
So in DOOM if I want to play Inferno ( Episode 3 ) i can pick it on the menu and dont need to do episode 1 and episode 2 each time i want to play the episode 3.

in DOOM 2 u cant pick ur episode before starting a game, u must do the 32 lvls from the beginning all the times.

They're both goods, but I think DOOM 1 is way better than DOOM 2.

DOOM 2 got more custom WADS ( In simple ways, DOOM 2 got more custom maps than DOOM 1 ) ( a good point for doom 2... if u like custom maps. ) ****

Im not a very custom wads lover so I cant really help u if u want to take custom WADS but I found Freedoom ( http://freedoom.github.io/ ) not so bad.

If you only want to play pwads then you can just download FreeDoom instead of buying. You'd get different monsters, textures and weapons, but nearly all pwads work ok. Brutal Doom works too, but the animations don't match (cause the mobs in FreeDoom are different than in the original).
