You can decide it yourself.
The game is free to play[www.ludocraft.com], but if you like it you should buy it because premium accounts have some extras.

what? it's free to play? But it says you have to buy it on its store page. Me is confused

The free to play version is comparable to a demo. You only can get to player-level 4. You can't use any perks and you can't choose your clothes.

Buying the game allows you to do everything properly.

That doesn't answer the following question: How large is the actual playerbase? If it's big enough, I'll consider buying this game, it looks great from what I saw.

relatively speaking, there isn't really a large base at all for this game. At times there will be about 30 people online, but thats more than enough for a game. One advantage this game has is that lag doesn't play as large a role in 'ruining' a gaming experience than in other games. So whereas i might be playing from oceania, i can easily play european and american servers without any real problems, so yes the player base is small, but it doesn't mean you wont be able to instantly find a game

Hmm, from my limited time with the game (3 hours or so) i have liked what i've seen. Graphically it isn't too impressive but it has a nice and unique art style which makes up for it. The game runs well and there is something satisfying about gunning down enemy ships. The boarding mechanic is fun but the sword combat is incredibly basic with only a swing attack, powered swing attack (both share the same animation) and a block (which is never used). It can get 'samey-samey' after a while as you're only really shooting down enemy ships and there is little to no tutorial or learning introduction as it basically throws you in on the deep end. Having said that you pick it up after a while and there is a certain charm to the game, it certainly isn't perfect, but it has character and isn't your run of the mill game which i approve of.

ty
it's curious the fact that this game has passed Greenlight by receiving many player votes (i upvoted, infact would buy it), and now there are just few players in game

unfortunately its a case of, "it looks good but costs money."

Just a quick heads up on the lack of a tutorial, we're putting the finishing touches to an official AirBuccaneers strategy guide, with Beginner/Intermediate and Advanced advice and strategies (along with HD screenshots and 1080p videos). Hopefully it'll make it a more enjoyable game for those who stick with it (you'd be surprised just how much depth there is in this game).

That's good to know, i admit i am an abismal pilot and having a tutorial on techniques and tactics would be quite valueble
