Feature Request: Downloading Windows id Software games for game-data-packager
Debian-based distros like Ubuntu and Mint have a package (game-data-packager) for creating ,debs for certain id Software games (namely Quake 1&3, Doom 1, 2 & Final, Heretic, Hexen, Rise of the Triad and Wolfenstein 3D).
To do this, game-data-packager need to be pointed towards certain game files (like the Doom .wads). Therefore it would be really useful if the supported games could be downloaded manually through Steam for Linux, for owners of said games.

This request is for ID Software, not Valve. You may want to write to them about this. It's up to ID Software to put their games in Steam for Linux. You can just download those games using WINE and Steam for Windows. Valve is providing a Steamworks tools to developers, it's up to them what they will do with it.
There are open source engine mods like Darkplaces (quake I), Yamagi Quake II, ioquake III, and id has released the source for idtech4. They do still have the binaries on their ftp for doom 3 and quake 4. These could be packaged without the assistance of id as they are all GPL now. I still vote for Valve to release these.
BUMP.. I just need the bought PAK files. Everything else is manageable. So I would want to just install the game on linux no more. Just to be able to download & install the game files is sufficient

I found a sort of solution. Check out the guide at https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/2uvj4p/linuxgamingprotip_use_steamcmd_download_steam/

Hi,

game-data-packager need to be pointed towards certain game files

Well, this tool is supposed to make one's life easier.

It should automaticaly find files in common locations:
~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Steam &
~/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/Steam/drive_c/Program Files/Steam

support for steamcmd is in the plans; someone needs to package this tool first:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=775365
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=775512

List of games supported by git version, this isn't id Software or Steam-specific :

Port it for your $distro if you find it usefull.

This is great news!
I now see that "need to be pointed towards" quote is from 2013; this was only implemented begin of 2015... feeling a little dumb here.
And five years later, with the addition of the new version of Steam Play and introduction of Proton, this has finally been implemented in a way.
