TF2 Maxing at 5fps during game play
I am using the open source ATI drivers and I cannot seem to get above 5fps no matter what I do. I am using a laptop with HD 4200 graphics. I am mainly confused because no matter what settings I use the game continues to play at 5fps. I play killing floor on high settings with a little lag but not much. Any other people come across this observation?

Don't use open source drivers.

I would rather stick to the open source drivers for my card since its older and would require me to downgrade the xorg version to match the legacy driver. My friend has the same graphics card and told me that when he used the proprietary drivers TF2 would not play at all, so I do not have much of a choice. I don't intend to use my laptop as my primary gaming rig, but ill take what I can get out of it.

The new proprietary drivers don't work on graphics cards under the 5000 series (i think)

If you do downgrade you need a bypass to start the game, because it doesn't support an OpenGL extention

Even there you'll get arround 30fps on an empty server..

tl;dr: Gaming on Linux with AMD is almost a hopeless task

i own a HD5770 and the last drivers work for me.
i have'nt a very high FPS (30-50), but they don't vary even on a full server

I just used the open source driver. I am not going to experiment with the AMD legacy driver as of right now. I saw basically just pointing out that the frame rate on the open source driver only stays at 5fps and I was wondering if anyone else had this observation.
