Just to experiment to see if it would work, because Portal 2 was already working for me in WINE, and the Linux version doesn't like my video card. The fact that the Windows version tries to work but is unplayable makes me think that my video card truly can't handle L4D2.
L4D1 barely works, and is kind-of-sort-of playable. Some things are invisible, like just about all the cars and some walkways. Rarely, the Infected are invisible; that's when the game becomes unplayable. (I use the lowest resolution with all the video detail/shader settings at high).
I ordered a GeForce GT 520. I did some research and found out that the GT 520 was a low-end nVidia card released the same year as L4D2. I know the card runs L4D2 on Windows; I'm hoping Steam for Linux will like it too.
You should be fine; we're always here to help out with any GPU-related issues. Ubuntu/Linux Mint should be able to pick up your GPU and install the relevant drivers, if not then it's relatively straightforward to do. You can try the LIVE disks of your chosen distro and then see what happens.
Should I install the 64-bit Linux driver or the 32-bit one? I'm using the 64-bit version of the OS, but I thought I read somewhere that Steam is 32-bit. Is that a problem?
Install 64-bit version of Ubuntu; you can easily install Steam on that because Ubuntu provides 32-bit libraries on the 64-bit version. If you need anymore help, just ask!
