Supported video cards for Linux
I've been trying to play Left 4 Dead 2 on my Linux desktop, because I'm in a videogame design class, and my group's project is a custom L4D2 map. My desktop is within the minimum requirements for L4D2, though not by much. I think I need to buy a new video card.

I can play Portal 2 and L4D1 in Wine on the lowest resolution settings, and they are both barely playable. I can also run the Windows version of L4D2 in Wine, but I can't see anything at all when I do.

Video card: AMD ATI RV516 [Radeon X1300/X1550 Series]
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 32000+
Memory: 3 gigabytes (technically 2824316 kB)
OS: Linux Mint 15 Cinammon 64-bit

I don't want to spend $200 on a new nVidia video card. I'm not looking for a perfect gaming experience; I just need to run a few games. Are there any old models that might be a slight upgrade from what I currently have, but more importantly, will definitely be supported by Steam for Linux?

yeah i never liked AMD's mobile gpu's , what version of wine are you running?
I use PlayOnLinux to manage different Wine prefixes for Windows games. I think the two Steam prefixes I have use Wine 1.5 (perhaps 1.5.31 or 1.5.25 -- I'm not sure how to check). My default Wine prefix that PlayOnLinux doesn't know about is 1.6.
hmmm at this point for me it would be a guess as I use all the programs from wine manually.

L4D2 has a Linux version, so why even bother with WINE?

Just to experiment to see if it would work, because Portal 2 was already working for me in WINE, and the Linux version doesn't like my video card. The fact that the Windows version tries to work but is unplayable makes me think that my video card truly can't handle L4D2.

L4D1 barely works, and is kind-of-sort-of playable. Some things are invisible, like just about all the cars and some walkways. Rarely, the Infected are invisible; that's when the game becomes unplayable. (I use the lowest resolution with all the video detail/shader settings at high).

I ordered a GeForce GT 520. I did some research and found out that the GT 520 was a low-end nVidia card released the same year as L4D2. I know the card runs L4D2 on Windows; I'm hoping Steam for Linux will like it too.

You should be fine; we're always here to help out with any GPU-related issues. Ubuntu/Linux Mint should be able to pick up your GPU and install the relevant drivers, if not then it's relatively straightforward to do. You can try the LIVE disks of your chosen distro and then see what happens.
I'm probably going to get a GeForce 9500GT instead, because I realized that I need a low-profile card to fit my PC's case.

Should I install the 64-bit Linux driver or the 32-bit one? I'm using the 64-bit version of the OS, but I thought I read somewhere that Steam is 32-bit. Is that a problem?

Install 64-bit version of Ubuntu; you can easily install Steam on that because Ubuntu provides 32-bit libraries on the 64-bit version. If you need anymore help, just ask!
