Unable to launch Tf2 or L4D2 [SOLVED]

I recently installed Ubuntu on my computer and was now trying to launch TF2 and the L4D2 Beta but nothing happens at all. When I click "play" on L4d2 it does absolutely nothing, when I click play on TF2 the "preparing to launch Team Fortress2..." window shows up but then all Steam does is syncing and that's it.
I managed to play HL2 perfectly, so far. I just don't know why TF2 and L4D2 don't launch. Please help me.

Ubuntu 13.04
ATI Radeon HD 5800 (latest drivr are installed)

SOLUTION:
Check your game files and check whether the respective .sh file is marked to be run as a program. If it's not, then that should be the reason why it doesn't run.

You should run Steam from the terminal to see error messages. Close Steam completely, then open a terminal from the dash or by pressing ctrl+alt+t and type:
steam

Ok, I exited Steam and launched it via the console and then tried to start TF2; This is the result:

i dont use Swap at all and all my game's run fine if you look it says

Thanks for pointing out that one line, Doc Holiday. THANK YOU! THAT was the final clue I needed.
It was so easy; all that was wrong was that the hl2.sh was NOT marked to be run as a program. Now it's running perfectly.

a lot of times you can just verify integrity of game cache and it will fix it
