You should run Steam from the terminal to see error messages. Close Steam completely, then open a terminal from the dash or by pressing ctrl+alt+t and type:
steam
/bin/sh: 1: /home/usernameremoved/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/Team Fortress 2/hl2.sh: Permission denied
Thanks for pointing out that one line, Doc Holiday. THANK YOU! THAT was the final clue I needed.
It was so easy; all that was wrong was that the hl2.sh was NOT marked to be run as a program. Now it's running perfectly.
