I'm new to linux, at work I have debian, today I came home excited because i was going to install ubuntu 13.04, I don't really like at all. I am a beginner but for me debian is the best and tomorrow I will install debian 7 cinamon :), maybe would you recommend some lightweight desktop for gaming? if you have another distro could indicate why use it? greetings new teammates I think this is the future =)

1st thing: This IS the future =)

Considering you have good hardware I don't think DE's will affect that much on performance, maybe 10-20 fps or so. A good choice is KDE where you can disable it's effects while full-screen programs are running and it's all done automatically.

I like Linux Mint Cinnamon, but I also like openSUSE (KDE, XFCE), Ubuntu and it's forks.

I think Ubuntu's variants are fine since they are more compatible with Steam. These include Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Linux Mint, Elementalist and others which you could always look up. I tried Linux Mint and didn't particularly like it;- too much eye candy for me.

If you want to install steam I would recommend going for Debian Jessy as it gives a lower amount of issues when installing steam. Since you don't like Ubuntu, you might want to try OpenSUSE or Fedora aswell, those are quite good.

I use Kubuntu 13.04, configurable as all get-out, which doesn't quite give me the GLMark score of, say, Razor-qt or LXDE, but is fast enough to play Trine 2, which is probably the most GPU-intensive game I've played on Steam. I also installed MATE. Lots of people dislike the Unity interface, but any of the other *buntu distros give you the massive Ubuntu repos, with their worldwide mirrors, and the world of Ubuntu PPAs, with a GUI you can live with or even love. KDE has the option to turn off desktop effects for fullscreen windows, which means I can play Trine 2 at a framerate high enough for smooth gameplay.

AMD 965, nVidia 650ti, 16GB PC-1333 (I do NOT recommend ATI GPUs for Linux; they're great for Windows, but nVidia is a better choice for Linux users, regardless of Linus' rant.

Debian is fine for gaming. I have the same FPS like I had on Ubuntu and Mint.

yeah go for debian jessie. Or stable + apt pinning the relevant packages. Also LMDE might be reasonable. Then, people also love Arch Linux. If all else fails, *buntu variants never fail to provide a windows-like experience ;) As for the Desktop: try them all (at least the big ones xfce,gnome,kde,unity), you can switch any time; everyone has different preferences for a reason.

thanks for recommendations guys, I taste with KDE and cinnamon today. then jessi is more advisable with steam? i have this doubt if me upgrade to jessi now...

jessie has steam already in its repositories, so dependencies and problems get resolved somewhat automagically. you can also go for debian stable and pull only the required packages. its not quite clear what to recommend as usually using a stable system with few unstable packages is more advisable. but this time you really need lots of critical components like a fresh glibc. Also debian testing is despite its name, still quite stable. In the end i expect you to have fewer problems with jessie or (the almost equivalent) LMDE. Most advisable with steam is probably Ubuntu LTS, as its currently the only officially supported linux distribution. (Also: do *not* use any non-Lts Ubuntu)

I don't see why a non-LTS bugs you that much. Some people have new hardware that is not compatible with 12.04, therefore they install 13.04 which has been working flawlessly for almost everybody. Not to mention that people have been using cutting-edge systems like Arch since Steam got into beta and it's been working well. I tried Debian Stable last year (6.0.6) and 7.0 about 4 months ago, it was too much time consuming to get everything I need working so I decided to go with it's forks (Ubuntu) and sometimes with the forks of it's forks, like Mint.
