Whats the deal with the speed record for 2500 m/s ? Bug or not?
I have googled and read some thread on the topic but as usual found no real conclusion.

I understand it referring to ground speed, and not orbital speed? But why did it just disappear?

As in you did not accept the contract and it expired?
Yes that is normal game behaviour.

If you look closely at the contracts you will see two time frames for contracts.
The first is a short timeperiod (few days) which tells you how much time you have before it goes "poof". The second is ususally quite a bit longer and tells how much time you have to complete the contract after accepting it.

Also, some contracts have no expire date, or rather the timeframe is set to never expire.

^^^ If this is not what you are refering to then could you please be more specific about your issue?

The ground speed records are automatic contracts that you don't accept, they just give them to you as you complete the previous one. Start up a new game, don't accept any contracts, and launch a ship, turning over sideways almost immediately. You'll complete 3 or 4 contracts without needing to accept any.
