How Active is Quake 3 On Steam?

I'm considering getting Quake 3 to play Duel while my friends on Quake Live are away (also to help me practice alot more)
Is there alot of ***ACTIVE*** Duel servers and players on Quake 3?
Also, will having the Steam version effect the ability to write a custom cfg, use Wolfcam and play CPMA Mods ect?
