Impossible skirmish
Maybe I just suck at this game, but I'm having extreme difficulties getting past the 4th skirmish map. The first 3 maps were ok, I did them on my first try. But the fourth one has you bottled in with two arrow towers, and is constantly pushing out high tier enemies for you to strike down. And this is on normal mode. I find that my resources can't possibly keep up with the enemies thrown at you, and the arrow towers make it so that you can only go down two lanes. And if you do you can be sure the AI sets up cannons and riflemen along those lines.
I tried using cannons to take out the towers, but then I don't have resources to fight off the enemies.

Any tips?

Just beat the fifth and sixth skirmish map now, again on the first try. Fourth is still unobtainable.

The fourth skirmish map is quite tough. I found rushing the General's Bodyguards using a Cavalry unit with 'Slay The All' applied was quite effective (when done early enough) and then applying 'Sustain' to finish off the General. It's worth playing some of the side quests to get enough EXP for upgrades (especially Charisma and Inner Peace).

I eventually did the same. Sent a cavalry unit up the top lane and forced it past the buildings. Used a sustain and slay all to finish off the bodyguards.

You dont suck. You just have to buy exp to win.. the game suck

It has been a while, I realize that, but, unlike the crybabies here who like to complain, you do not need to purchase exp to win this. I have completely beaten this game on the hardest difficulty and I haven't even spent all the basic exp from playing the campaign mode, let alone purchasing extra.

The key upgrades to buy are the ones that automatically give you a warbanner and automatically give you first general power. After that I would suggest upgrading general power charge rate, the turning order charge rate, and those cheap upgrades that give you wood, metal, and spirit from the secondary buildings. Those are all quite useful. The unit upgrades I didn't even bother with.

I assume you are talking about the 'slay the general' skirmish that is in the bottom left corner. The strategy for this level that I used is quite simple, I built up teams of 1 unit of basic gunner dudes and 1 unit of monk gunner dudes. You put the normal gunners in the front, and monks in the back, shooting over their shoulder and increasing their range. You should outshoot everyone the enemy comes at you with.

I set my general powers alternating healing and damage immunity, starting with healing (which you get for free from the upgrade). You should have 2-4 general powers by the time they even begin sending forces your way. Since it takes some time to get the monks, I put swords right in front of the normal gunners until I can get 3 units of monks, then I delete the swordsmen.

Put a cannon on each tower, and send your dudes inbetween the towers and continually assault in this manner. Make sure to have more gunners fully trained in your queue and replace guys as you go, and make sure to heal/make units immune to damage as needed.

You should be able to win very quickly and easily using this strategy.

If you read my last post and Skelebone's post all you need is a single cavalry unit and a 'sustain' and 'slay all' order. Push the cavalry unit up the top lane, force it past buildings when they start attacking buildings. And then use the generals orders to kill the bodyguards and general. It only takes a couple of minutes.

Nine years later and this thread totally saved me! Took the advice here (never paid a cent for any Experience, only what came with the campaign) & beat it on Shogun difficulty my very next try. THANK YOU!

I pumped out one Cavalry (plus a Naginata cavalry behind him to increase the melee attack of adjacent units), ran him up the top lane, kept pushing him past buildings & unit spawns -- all the while buffing him with Slay Them All + Sustain -- & didn't even lose the original cavalry.

(FYI: Did it without the Warbanner upgrade as well.)
