And yes, you can screw up a build, there is only a limited number of skill points available and you cannot go back and repeat old maps or quests to grind more exp. Also, it's been a while but I'm pretty sure you can only ever pick ONE upgrade for each skill, you can't get both upgrades.
For your first playthrough I would recommend you stick to the blue side tree on Arkail and never even touch red mode, I've never liked it. Either tree is good for Styx, though I personally mostly upgrade his red side as it can become very evasive and do tons of damage - and you won't always have Arkail there to tank for you, so dodging will save you a lot of tears. The stun bomb in blue tree is still good to upgrade though, you can just switch to blue for stun and then go back to red.
Crowd control effects like stun and debuffs (especially armor debuffs) are very important in this game, because your healing will never be amazing even on easy mode. Slow and steady wins the race.
EDIT: Forgot, you will also have the option of choosing a secondary/subclass for both of them later on. Arkail's upgrades are pretty straightforward: you can either be even more of a berserker if you're playing a lot of red skill tree (again, I don't like this), or you can take the other path and unlock a more defensive tree. I always do blue + the defensive subclass, but some people love berserk mode.
Styx is more complicated, you can either choose to NOT merge with a certain character and gain the Assassin upgrade, which has very expensive abilities and has never really interested me over what his normal red side tree can already do, or you can do the merge and gain Shadowgoblin which adds some range/utility/lifedrain. My favorite Styx is mostly red side skills + Shadowgoblin, but I'd be interested to see how blue side + Assassin works out. I don't think I would pair red + Assassn or blue + Shadowgoblin though, even though those seem like the obvious choices. I think they overlap too much.
