How many range units does AI recruit in your campaign?
I have been experiencing very boring battle due to enemy having lots of range units, now this mean you cannot play tactically and ceertainly no pikes. This usualy mean battle don't last long
becasue very little melee occurs and if i mke a mistake i suffer huge casualties to range units, so i learn to bring loads of calvary.
So in short I am playing Rome version of empire and Napolean total war because battle occurs with range units now, the joy of watching melee fights like in shogun 2 and the rest is gone. Amazingly archers is the least effective of the 3 types of range units, this cannot be true because archers should be the most effective of all

Usually about half slinger and skirmisher for normal armies. When the AI has no more cities and just goes around picking up mercenaries it is obviously more varied.

Are you playing vanilla?

Half low tier infantry and half low tier ranged units, with the occasional mercenary unit.

You'll rarely see anything other than that.

depends on faction, playing with rome now, and the greeks are mixed good, african factions barley use them, and northern tribes use them alot, but they are their only way of killing my legionairs, i noticed his melee units barley have kills and skirmishers and such, have alot more

Yes. For me it depends on what faction it is too. Although the eastern factions may have more ranged units in general because of thier culture.

In past total war series, AI definitely recruti more melee with range only acting as support. In Rome total range it seems range units form the main force of AI

I'm seeing mostly half slingers and half levies. The AI doesn't really seem to tech up, the most advanced unit in their army is always the general unit. Every now and then I'll still see armies that consist entirely of slingers/ranged units, though it is rare.

Yeah, Javelins are way over powered. A unit of javelins can destroy a heavy infantry without getting into melee. No reason to get the heavy shield javelins since armour does not count much against javelins only slings and arrows. Anyway, the AI picks the missle troops because they have a high attack.

In my playthroughs, the enemy AI recruits more troops than I do. Usually has like a ton of Infantry and long-range units which will attack me head on. It's insane on how many units it recruits, within the first 5 turns of any campaign faction, whoever I go to war with will have two full armies of troops while I barely have enough gold to make up an complete army of all three types. I lost Rome when I was only 10 turns in the game on EASY!!! In the previous games, this would never occur and I would find myself even or slightly at an disadvantage, not completely over-powered by the enemy at the beginning of a campaign. I think the AI is broken.

In campaign it is annoying that javelins can take out heavy infantry, BUT in multiplayer it makes sense since javelin have low ammo. That is not a problem but you need heavy cavalry
