Tiy, the lead dev of this game, did originally work as a sprite artist for Terraria. But he quit for some reason, ages ago.
Redidit stopped updating Terraria all by himself, only once 505 Games added a lot of stuff into their console version, then the PC rage started, so he was obliged to do more PC updates, until Terraria 2.
No. You can tell your friends they've won Imbeciles of The Year as far as I'm conscerned though.
Starbound is a Terraria clone.
That much is true of the stable build. We are hoping for a more expansive and non-terraria experience when the progression system is overhauled and the update pushed.
Any idea when that will be?
The whole reason this topic came up is we started playing Terraria again. When asked by one of my friends how Starbound compared I gave some serious though before replying and frankly I don't think it measured up in it's current state.
The progression curve is kind of crap. Regardless of how deep you dig it seems resources are tied to the sector you in since that one patch. I found tons of iron and copper on all planets in Alpha and that was about it. So when i beat the boss and goto to Beta hoping to find better ores, but nope it's still lots of iron and copper. The only change is monsters are harder and I can make steel by combining Iron & Coal. The same thing happens with all the tiers.
Terraria crafting was nicers because you just had to stand near tables and it all unlocked. Hear you have to bounce around between them if you forget which table had the recipe you wanted.
I've already beating the last boss and made top tier armor from mining lvl 10 planets about half a dozen times. Mostly due to back in the day when the characters got reset after each patch. So I got real good at knowing the fastest path up.
Sure Starbound has other worlds you can explore but honestly since you can port your character from one world to another in Terraria it's basically the same thing.
We have been told there is no ETA on an update or a stable build. Once we have more info as a community i'm sure you will know. Sorry I can't tell you anymore. This is what we know.
I am a little hype for terraria 1.3 and Terraria 2. So far it has never let me down yet. All the major updates have been good enough reason for me to start over and play it to finish.
