Xbox 360 Controller Not Working
So I have the problem where my Wireless Game controller (which has the adapter connected to my PC plugged) is completely unresponsive in Dark Souls. The controller works fine with other games, and the Xbox Live window pops up at the top asking me to sign in, which I do and the controller works just fine in that location.

I looked online, and some people said to uninstalled Razer Nostromo's file and disconnected it from the computer if you have it, I have already taken this action. The next thing I read was to disable some HID files, but that they would have to be turned back on after game play. This seems kind of stupid to have to go to that trouble for something that was designed to work with the program in the first place, so does anyone have another solution?

You have to disable the HID game controller if you want it to work. You wont get it to work otherwise. Its easy and once you have done it then it will take 5 seconds to do next time. I havent even bothered changing it back and havent had any problems. I also have a Nostromo and it does'nt effect anything.

This is what you need to do -

Go to Start menu/Control Panel/Device Manager

Open the Human Interface Device menu

Right click on any HID-compliant game controller and select Disable.

Re-start Dark Souls

This is the easist way to do it.

Same here. I Used X360CE with an old PS2 controller and it worked rather well except for the fact that the controller is really old and sticks. So I bought an Xbox360 wired controller. Won't work on its own, won't work with X360CE. Tried the above remedy. Nothing.

As I just found here http://steamcommunity.com/app/211420/discussions/0/846940248690230181/ I deleted the dsm fix and it works now.

This worked to fix the same issue for me in Dark Souls 2 as well. This thread came up in my Dark Souls 2 google search. Thanks!

I had to disable my Logitech G13 gamepad in order for my 360 controller to work in this game.

This kind of nonsense is inexcusable and the developers and publishers should be ashamed for releasing such a :poop: PC port.

Weeeiiird... My controllers worked fine then randomly stopped, followed these steps and bam! controllers work again, could this affect other steam games or is it dark souls specific?

Thanks for the answer, steps and clarification on nostromo!

I had the same trouble.

In my "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition\DATA" directory there is an executable file called "x360ce.exe". This program allowed me to provide a profile to my xbox360 controller as none of the buttons had been assigned on my gamepad. It also allows remapping the buttons.

The only thing is that due to it taking me so long to get this damn thing working, I am not sure if the .exe was there already or if I downloaded it....

This didn't work for me. Or rather it did but did not survive a reboot. This was after converting the existing installation to the Steamworks version. After disabling the HID Game controller I found that the controller no longer worked for other games, such as, MGS: Ground Zeroes. When I get around to it I'm just going to uninstall the game and redownload it. I'm assuming something went wrong in the Steamworks conversion.

Dont disable the HID-compliant game controller.

Plug the controller in, go to the dark souls installation folder and launch 'x360ce.exe'
Once you have launched this file you will need to apply a profile to the controller, luckily there are some presets available. At the bottom of the window you should see a drop down menu called 'presets' click this and choose a preset (in my case I choose Controller (xbox360 wireless reciever for windows)). Click load. You should hear the windows sound for a device connecting.
Go to 'devices and printers' located in control panel. You should now see your controller listed, check that this works correctly - the two trigger buttons will be set as axis', this is normal.

launch the game.
Aaah, so Valve added x360cd.exe? Or was it there all along? Thanks for the tip. I'd seen this referenced but I assumed players had added it to their installations.
