[How-To] Windows 8 Setup
All of the following steps took me hours to figure out under Windows 8. The good news is the game runs extremely well using the following steps and it fixes all issues I know about.

1. Right click the darksouls.exe and click "compatibility" tab. Run in windows 7 compatibility mode.

2. After installing initial game, uninstall GFWL client AND the redistributable from the "Programs and Features" area of Windows 8.

3. Download newest verstion of GFWL from Microsoft. Install it by right-clicking the executable and using "run as adminstrator".

4. Use DSFIX mod in DATA folder under Steam/Dark Souls directory to make the game look and play better. In case you do not like to read directions, make sure to uncheck anti-aliasing option within Dark Souls game upon installing this mod.

Upon doing these steps you should have a completely working version of Dark Souls.

I also bought the "USB wireless dongle xbox" from amazon sold by HDE for $12.25 and use my xbox controllers with the game on my computer now. It works great too for those looking to use their wireless controllers on their PC.

All I did to fix the problem was delete GFWL while the error came up for Dark Souls, then quit it. I proceeded to install the .exe from the microsoft then it worked.

Ive installed GFWL and done everything as the instructions list above but i still am not able to connect to live in the dark souls game it self. I have a feeling its something to do with the compatibility set up but im just generally not sure what to do.

I didn't actually need the mod. I just set it to compatibility mode in windows 7, downloaded windows live, and dark souls worked for me.

yeah, the mod is not required to run dark souls. But I highly recommend using it, since it makes the game look and run A LOT better. :)
Check the description on the site I linked above if you're interested.
