Can't launch using Windows 8

So. I've been trying to play Dark Messiah, but when I click play, try to launch as admin, launch in compatibility mode, run the fix for Windows 7 (even though I'm running Windows 8) users, everything, it just loads for a second and does nothing. It doesn't even launch and crash. It simply doesn't appear to even try. I get the cursor with a spinning wheel for 2 seconds and then it goes away, nothing else happens. I have tried everything I can, but I can't even get the partial success of having it crash. I have tried launching compatibility in Windows Vista SP2, Windows XP SP 3, Windows XP, and Windows 7.

Any help would be awesome.

I've got exactly the same problem but I didn't find any answer..and I paid 10 euros for this game, Steam really disapointed me on this one...

How did steam disappoint you? Read the system requirements. Not Windows 8,Vista,or 7 can run it. Don't buy games that your computer can't run. Steam told you thats Windows 8 Can't run it.

Thanks for your help white knight, you're very useful ! And It wasn't say on the game page, I bought lot of games on steam and never had this problem, so yeah maybe I was too enthusiastic, and now I'll be more suspicious before I'll buy a game but it wasn't clear at all that my computer could run the game...

I actually have managed to get it fixed.

Kane, please check your antivirus. After searching through my event viewer application logs I figured out that my antivirus manages the compatibility dlls and it would not allow the program to run. I changed my exceptions in my antivirus and it works perfectly fine now.

Steam has patched it with the fix that allows it to run in the later Windows Lt. Mopi, so you really weren't helping even a little. Lighten up.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ it worked. Thanks man. Its really weird how windows 8 works with things. Now my anti virus wont open this game when it would open just fine in my old computer same anti virus and all. I have one program that the desk top icon changed and I have no idea why. Cant even find the icon file it changed to on the old pc so where ever it came from I have no idea.

i dont have anti virus stuff installed on my PC . I DL avg or a virus program do a scan , then uninstall it :)

Most viruses arent serious. You have to open emails you dotn know who they are from, be Dling dodgy stuff without looking at comment sections etc to get the truly bad viruses.

Please, don't do misinformation: this game works fine with all Windows versions.

Didn't work for me. I turned off my AV and it still doesn't work. Anything anyone can do to get this to work on my machine please? I'm running Windows H8.1 unfortunately and have done all the suggestions with no resolution.

I got it working with this command line:

-dxlevel 90 -width 1920 -height 1080 -console -novid

I attribute the fix to -dxlevel 90 which is dx 9.0. Anyways, I was able to get past the Dark Messiah splash screen and into the game. I haven't checked to see if it will crash when I start a new game though. That remains to be seen.

Never mind, just works for the Prologue then crashes the same way loading chapter 1.

Have the same problem , but running it with Windows 10 now. Problem is that I use Trend Micro Anti-Virus and that doesn't even seem to work. Yes, my Anti-Virus seems to be playing up and Not sure how do what ever worked here to get this game running. This is a problem with a few games as well.

I have 7 64 and it runs okay for me, why?
