Devil on the Mississippi is the first game in the series which is more open to casual hidden object game players, but it didn’t forget its roots and presents yet another great mystery story.

The third entry in the Midnight Mysteries series, Devil on the Mississippi, takes us to the world of Mark Twain (referred by his real name, Samuel Clemens), the next deceased writer who contacts our protagonist from beyond the grave.

Just like in Salem Witch Trials, the plot jumps all over time and space, yet it is easier to follow, despite featuring two distinct cases. It starts with an investigation into the death of Samuel’s brother, which eventually leads us to England to prove that the plays of Shakespeare were written by Christopher Marlowe, the author of ‘The Tragicall History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus’.

Gameplay still has a large emphasis on point ‘n’ click style inventory management and item combinations over hidden object scenes. Still, difficulty dropped a lot thanks to the better hint system, straightforward progression, and just the overall polishing the entire game received. Put together, they form probably the best entry in the Midnight Mysteries series.

Hidden objects are mostly large and easy to find but some puzzles are complicated and come without explanation. No voice is acting, but there are many dialogues.Stories can be confusing.

Yet another good hidden object adventure game in the Midnight Mysteries series. Great graphics, perfect level of difficulty in hidding objects in the screen. This time we follow a storyline about Mark Twain and his characters from his novels. This places us in the South near the Mississippi River. Lots of collections and extras to keep you playing for achievements and 100% completion. Pick it up cheap and it's worth it.

I did not really enjoy this hidden object game due to multiple reasons:
- can't skip cut scenes or slow animations, especially annoying when those appear while you are trying to move from one location to the next (mainly an issue in the bonus chapter),
- not a fan of the art style,
- some of the hidden object item descriptions are just weird, especially if not a native English speaker,
- collecting the clovers and ravens is quite tedious and it is extremely easy to miss one and not being able to go back to get it,
- it feels quite dated.

Works without issues on Linux with Proton (7.0-4).

Hidden objects plus a basic point and click type thing with a nice and spooky theme. And the achievements work on this one. Yay! It all works together reasonably well although at some points as you move through environments which can be completed with only a couple of clicks you do start to wonder why they bothered carefully drawing so many locations. The puzzles are mostly quite simple and if you get stuck you do have the option to skip them, The stacking puzzles were the least fun to play as the physics are a bit wonky and you couldn't rotate the stones but this was a minor annoyance.

By the end of the game I was starting to miss the hidden object side of the game but not to worry as completing the game unlocks a bonus chapter very light on plot and heavy on hidden objects as well as a nice game mode that allows you to find *every* object in the game.

The collectibles are well hidden and there is no freeplay option available so you do need to collect them all as you progress through the game, meaning that you will likely have to play through several times to spot them all.

All in all it's a very nicely put together game and well worth it if you like this genre or fancy something casual to play that doesn't feel cheap.

If you're a hidden objects game fan, this is excellent! If you get stuck, there is a guide in the game. I totally enjoyed it!

I've played one other Midnight Mystery, 2, the Salem Witch Trials Game. Though it wasn't a long or real challenging game, it wasn't quite as short or relatively easy as "Devil on the Mississippi".

This is a combination game, my favorite kind. It has hidden object scenes, pure puzzles, and lots of inventory objectives. I counted 9 hidden object scenes and 16 puzzles in the main game, ranging from very very easy to moderately difficult. This game will please a wide range of skill levels and ages. Even if you prefer harder games, it's still fun, just short.

The story line is all over the place. The main character is Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain. The game touches on real happenings in Twain's life, including the off-beat, such as that he was the first writer to write on a typewriter. And more well-known facts, such as the death of his younger brother, Henry, in a steamboat explosion. And whether or not Christopher Marlowe wrote the Shakespeare plays. In real life, Clemens published a 1907 pamphlet, titled "Is Shakespeare Dead?", in which he argues that there's no way that Shakespeare could have written Shakespeare. Also, there's the real fact of Clemens' 1894 bankruptcy, which, incidentally, in real life he paid back 100% with profits from a European reading tour.

The game takes these facts and mixes them up with fantasy, which got pretty funny. Such as Christopher Marlowe making a deal with Mephistopheles, trading his soul for the chance to secretly survive his knifing and write more Shakespeare plays. The game's plot line is certainly imaginative, but it's not always easy to follow all the associations unless you already know some of the real history and controversy.

In this "Collector's Edition" you get a Bonus Chapter called "Memphis-topheles" - hee hee. It had 5 hidden object scenes and 5 puzzles. You also get a full-blown strategy guide built into the game. You may not need to use it much, because puzzles can be skipped, and there's a good hint system. In a nice twist, though, you have to accumulate hints. Where ever you go in the game, click on any representation of a raven. You get one hint for each raven, and there are plenty of ravens.

There are fewer hidden object scenes in "Devil on the Mississippi - Collector's Edition", compared to many combination games I've played lately. It does have more puzzles, though, but as many of these puzzles are very easy, that advantage cancels out. For comparison, you can check out " Faces " or " House of 1,000 Doors: Palm of Zoroaster (Collector's Edition) ".

Game extras include an opportunity for "Unlimited Hidden Object Mode". This will kick up amount of game time in a major way. You unlock this option if you discover all 70 of the four-leaf clovers hidden in all the scenes. I liked how some objects on the hidden object list are shown in green type. This means that either the item is temporarily hidden or that the name given is a little riddle. So when the list shows "letter covering", you have to find an envelope. "Walking support" is a cane.

First Time Played

HOPA - This game featured some "mysteries" around Shakespeare, Mark Twain and some other stuff about a riverboat. Maybe if you're into English Lit. this would be great stuff indeed. I found it boring with way to much dialogue to read about things I really don't care about. Overall, I consider this 3 hours that I could've spent playing something better.

The actual puzzles aren't bad, except for the stupid maze one. But really, there's nothing to see here unless the story grips you.

Recommendation: avoid.

I bought this Game a while back in a huge Bundle and I must say I am not dissapointed.

Midnight Mysteries 3: Devil on the Mississippi Collectors Edition is the third Game in the Midnight Mystery Series and before you continue reading this Review I recommend to you that you go and play the first 2 Midnight Mysteries before you grab this one.

Midnight Mysteries 3: Devil on the Mississippi is by default coming with the Collectors Edition meaning you will get a Bonus Chapter, Hunt dem Bones Bonus Mode, Wallpapers and just as before Artwork within the Game itself.

This Game is just as good as Number 1 & 2 are. Once again you wont be able to change the Resolution of the Game however it is alot higher then it was in the first 2 Games.

The new Crafting Mechanic which first got introduced in Number 2 is also in this Game however I had the feeling it got put to use alot better then it did in Number 2.

Unlike Number 1 this Game is alot more like Number 2 in Scariness and Jumpscares. Once again you will have a great atmosphere with a scary background noise and jump scares from time to time.

For the first time in this Game Series I noticed that there was an inbuild Guide incase you get Stuck or want to just get the 100% Achievements. So you dont have to google and look through some rubbish recorded Videos because your Solution is always with you in the Game!

Although it does not say so on the Store Page this Game does have Steam Achievements which work fine unlike in Number 2 where they did not unlock at all. So if you are searching for a Game to get 100% on this might your Game!

The Games Puzzles were alot of fun and some of them were quite difficult for me personally which is why I was glad that there was a guide included. The Bonus Chapter itself was alot Shorter then the Story itself but therefore a little bit more difficult.

The Story took me around 3 Hours to complete + 1 hour for the Bonus Chapter. I believe you can put around 6 Hours in this Game if you play the Unlimited Hidden Object Game together with dem Bones Bonus Mode.

I do recommend this Game highly to any HO / Point & Click Game Fan and to anybody that likes getting 100% Achievements. However I do recommend grabbing this Game on Sale as 10€ might be a bit much.

Very good hidden object game. The graphics are dated at this point, but still well worth playing. This one and Haunted Houdini are my favorites in the Midnight Mysteries series.

Very well done HO game. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Crazy story jumps around a lot, but the adventure aspect, the puzzles, and the HOS are all good stuff. After you beat the main game, there's a bonus chapter, and a "Dem Bones" minigame, as well as "Unlimited mode" hidden object scenes. Even in those, it doesn't make you find ALL the objects. Bizarre.

Achievement-wise:
I used a guide to find all the clovers and ravens and bones, because all of those are skippable if you go too far and you'd have to restart the game (I screwed up and did just that at 25/100).

I didn't realize there's an achievement for not using the lantern, so I didn't even try for that one, and don't want to restart the game again :)
