Haha.

They're all going to eat you for breakfast.

Try eating them for breakfast instead. The salt should make them taste better. :P

(Honestly I find Nygtilger to be one of my fave bosses. Devising strats to fight it is quite fun. If you need tips I can give suggestions.)

That boss has f!ucked up so many newcomers, especially when they thoughts nightmare difficulty was a piece of cake because they stormed first few floor effortlessly.

The best part is...Centipede is one of easiest boss in this game.

They don't call it the Devil's Tower for nothing!

Ehh, I'd disagree. It's only easy if you get lucky with timing hits right so as to minimize the degree you have to deal with the splodey balls. And that's not something a newbie would know to do. In fact first time I beat it I didn't even do that, and it's pretty hard to do cleanly.

You need to either level up a bit to helps you or just destroying each part without being reckless

I actually agree that the centipede is one of the easiest bosses in the game. That's from the perspective of Boss Rush though.

I went with damaging each segment equally before destroying all of them. I get the feeling the game is easier with a controller vs keyboard only. I'll have to give that a shot.

Congrats!

And I didn't even figure out that strat my first time beating it, haha. The splodey balls gave me so much trouble...

FWIW I think the game plays fine with keyboard, aside from occasional ghosting issues (which vary between keyboards). I don't have a gamepad so I don't exactly have a choice, but I remember feeling that Mega Man X worked better with keyboard controls since I could use more fingers and I haven't really gone back to using a gamepad since. But a lot of people say what you say, that it's probably easier with gamepad, so maybe I'm just weird.

You're not weird, a game is still playable even with keyboard. I'd completed a game 100% with keyboard back then. I was little poor and didn't have controller for PC that time. I had to adjust some key though because the default was uncomfortable.

Still I also find this sort of game is easier when you play using controller or gamepad. I'm grown up with controller as well so using keyboard to play this game at that time was actually abnormal for me, but in the end I managed.

Ah, I grew up with the NES and SNES controllers alongside the keyboard but have been using keyboard for everything since the 90s (except for a brief stint using a GC controller for Smash Melee and Metroid Prime) for everything including 2D platformers and Zeldalikes so maybe I'm just more used to it.

I'm just curious, how do you map the functions this game has? Especially the "face button" functions -- jump, attack, and magic (hold to charge). Which fingers take care of which functions?

I'm sorry, I don't remember. It was 3 years ago since I last played this game.

3 years!? Well it's good to replay time to time...

No luck involved. Damage all of the segments to half by just running forward/backward along his body while spamming AOE, then kill them all at once after he comes back down from the wall. The boss does his rolling attacks on HP thresholds you're almost certain to shove him past in the process -- he'l spend half the time he's dropping poison bombs rolling around, which is the one time you can just batten down and even sneak some safe hits on him while he's stopped.

Also remember that when you're running around on his back, you can use the extra height to jump over his head when he doubles around. This way you can get him to pile up on himself, which makes it even easier to AOE his segments, and contains his poison bombs right next to you all at once.

The thing about Nygtilger is that he's one of the few bosses that basically doesn't change between difficulties other than a number boost. Once you pin him solid on Normal, you'll probably oneshot him on Nightmare.

And yes, I 100%'ed this game with a keyboard too. Honestly I'd say it was easier that way -- this game doesn't have a lot of places where you even want finer than diagonal movement, and it's more likely to make you run into or off of stuff.

I don't think there is a single Ys in existence (even non-steam ones) where the "finer than diagonal movement" of the mouse is more desirable over the near-instant reaction speed of keyboard directional arrows.

That said, you can technically get both using a controller stick (I'm not sure if there is a tradeoff in this case since I also use a Keyboard-Only setup).

There is a rather massive skip you can do with mouse controls. Dunno if they've patched it out yet, but it's kind of hilarious. Start at 17:15.

regardless of actual difficulty the boss is rather a sh#tshow

literally, in fact (haha)

it's just wash rinse repeat and play pooper scooper with all the garbage his body spits out

yeah it might not be "hard" but it's certainly not engaging. just charge ability... repeat... charge... play pooper scooper, hope you don't get walled between poop you failed to scoop and the centipede
