Dear Esther

Vezi statistici:
Worth Buying?
I got a 75% off coupon and I was wondering if this is worth buying. I've been told its not a game, but more something you sit back and watch. Lots of positive reviews though, so is it worth it?

No, if you want the free version of it here it is. "I loved Ester but I killed her or something now I'm going to jump off this radio town and kill my self" there I just saved you $10
It can be completed in one sitting it runs off the half life engine, its only controls are WASD and the mouse and its simply boring as hell.

I just played through it today and though it is very short it is very good. you can finish the game in about an hour.
the "game" is beautiful though. The story is quite good too. (I am still confused at what everything meant.)
It is not a game everyone would enjoy. as you can see there are quite a few haters. If you are at all interested after seeing the store page and reading the reviews, you will probably like it though.
worth $10? probly not
worth buying with coupon? yes

Despite the douchebag up there, try it if you're in for a good story driven game. It's something that require more than two neurons to work that's why so many people refuse to like or understand it.
It have a beautiful score and an imersive enviroment, if you like to lose in it. It's a game that take it's own time, not to rush into it, just enjoy the slow pace, the surrondings, the music and the little bit of story given.
No, I agree with Mine Turtle, this game is not only boring, but full of itself. The dialog reads like the most emo poetry, most of the lines don't even make sense, but are there because 'LOOK HOW DEEP AND POETIC I AM!' The one good thing about this game is that the caves do look very pretty. So if you are willing to pay for a scenery picture and bad poetry on how beautiful his suicide is, then yes it would be worth it to you.

I wouldn't even be so upset if A. it wasn't the most pretentious thing I have ever heard and B. if people wouldn't have praised it so much. It's not deep, complex, or difficult to understand. It is some bad poetry that wants to be presented in a long drawn out manner.

Or much simple you don't like it, it doesn't mean that it's "bad developed/writte/acted" or such, simply isn't in your chords/tastes/likes. You know, i have a lot of games that i don't like, but i don't call ♥♥♥♥ on them, because it's pretty pointless.
If you really want a game that is actually worth buying, that you actually do something in other then walk with a even better story. Try Gone Home. It was simply amazing, and I also bought this with the coupon and I'm kinda upset I spent even $2. I cant imagine how people that paid ten feel
So just because you like it it isn't a terribly written piece of pretentious hipster bait? I disagree, because I'm not saying it is bad just for me not liking it (or it misrepresenting itself as interactive media), I know of tons of things I don't like that I have to admit has other qualities that keep it from being gabage.

I think it is a badly written game for several; he doesn't use half the words in it properly, he caused someones death and decided he was going to be poetic about it (while still some how making it about himself), his words are poetic just becuse it wants to be deep (when poetic words are meant to convey a very descriptive and flowing narritive), he didn't make use of the pointless deadends he added (this one was totalbiscuits but I'm making use of it too after watching his video), The music was lack luster in my opinion even if she used it in a fitting mannor (the music I guess isn't terrible though), and worst of all I knew the moment I recognized the end spot the moment I saw the tower in the distance at the beginning and once I reaslized how emo the writter was I also knew what he was joing to do there (the worst thing anthing something trying artistic should be is dull and predictable to the point of being formulaic).

The last complaint could easily have been solve if he didn't kill himself at the end, and instead did anything else, like pulling out an urn to spead her ashes at the end after making it seem like he was going to jump the whole time. That would signify him moving on and that the whole trip wasn't about his self-righteous sucide, but him coming to terms with his mistake and would atleast give some depth to this story. It would even give an explination to showing all the stuff he did in his grief since that would be where the character development would be. (he even states he chose to cremate her)

What if i told you that everything you see aren't real? He didn't kill himself because the island isn't a real island but a representation of his mind? Never thought that being "poetry-ish" is all a big metaphor and not a real person wandering? that's the whole point and that's why there are so many speculations still unsolved on who the narrator is or suchs. I repeat myself you're too biased because it isn't a game that you like but not because it's bad or you're stupid, you simply like different things, that's why there aren't such "bad or good games" but games that someone likes and some others not, plain and simple.
I hate most of sports games, but doesn't make them bad or such, even if i find most of them boring. That's the point, we can't argue on the value of a product by personal opinions.
Then in addition to everyone else it commits one of the worst sins for a story, 'it was all just a dream' trope. There is also no hint that it was all just a dream except the last scene, and even that is pretty weak to suddenly base that on seeing as everything else in the game was supposed to be taken litterally not metaphorically.

You also keep saying I am biased, that does not in anyway support your arguement, I am biased again Ride to Hell, doesn't mean that game is not garbage. You are having trouble finding valid reason for why it is good so you keep grasping at the cope out 'everyone's opinions are different' defence. I am tired of people using that, especially when they use it with an implication of being 'holier than thou' and rising above everyone else morally.

I also hate sports games, but my gripes with EA Sports isn't about the genre but the fact that they release what is basically DLC as a new game with very little innovation. The same can be said about this .. thing, it could have been entertaining but not as it is because it was very poorly excuted .

I actually thought that this kind of medium would be perfect as a way for a city or island to show of it's legends and sites, basically a vitual tour guide diguised as a game.

Even raising against a game and people who like it isn't a smart thing, just so you know :)
When I see a problem, I am not inclined to ignore it. Also I don't you have a valid reason for it not being a smart thing.

Wow ok I'm of the opinion that the poetry isn't that bad, the entire place was stunning (not just the caves) and no, I don't really think committing suicide and then appearing to turn into a bird at the end somehow ruins it all, but it was extremely emotionally draining for me, in no small part because I have some mental health issues, so I'm wary of replaying it. I wouldn't go as far as to say it's not worth it though, it is pretty stunning, and if you play through it more than once (you can even skip chapters if you don't want to sit through the entire harrowing experience again) you get a different story. There are a lot of really good things about this game, and personally it's worth $10 just to experience it once.
This like/like-not discussion is so pointless. I personally like this kind of game for being 1st person, having beautiful, immersive graphics and customizable keyboard and an intriguing storyline, what else do you want? You miss killing people by the dozen with fancy guns or mega swords? Wreak havoc with every step you take, preferably in 3rd person to see yourself perform these heroic deeds? Now that's what I call extremely boring but if you like that, have it your way, to each his own.
This is a walking simulator, with ocean sounds and occasional narration thrown in, it may be a good program to run if you want a "tv window" like they had in Total Recall. Other than that, unless your a very strange person i'd say dont bother, or try to get a copy for free. This game was based off of a mod for half life, which probably still exists, so you can literally play the game without paying.
