Not so primogeniture...
I started playing as Byzantium, and my inheiritance laws are set at Primogeniture, but every son I have becomes the new heir. WTF?

Are you sure it's not set to ultimogeniture?

Yeah. It says Agnatic-Cognatic Primogeniture. Seems to be a glitch.

Moreover, it just seems to be this first generation. My heir's oldest is his heir.

If I'm remebering correctly (I went from Byzantine to Rome so I don't know if the mechanics change) you can designate who you want to be your heir. You use an honorary title to do it. So, to counteract the issue, you could just designate your desired son as heir.

A son born after the parent's ascension to the throne (basically, the ones with the 'Born in the Purple' trait) takes precedence over a son born before.

That makes sense. Thanks, Bitter

Bittersteel speaks the truth. Born in purplle children have a stronger claim to the empire title but it only goes for the Empire of Byzantium title. This means, that if you have children born earlier they will inherit any kingdoms you might hold where the succession is primogeniture.

That mechanic sort of makes sense, but at the same time it sounds very silly to me. Your eldest is still your eldest, it's only because of how the game's trait system works. It would be nice if they fixed it in those cases when empires are being formed.

the purple precidence isnt even so bad, it gives you some leverage if your normal firstborn, well, stinks.

plus i think purple also influences Elective aswell, I think Electors for Byzantium will tend to favor Purple, along with the Despot Honorary Title, the latter is another piece of leverage for influencing heirs.

between the tools you have to picking heirs and the byzantine laws for free revokation of Doux titles, you probably have the most control out of any Empire over your subjects and succession.

If you can manuver yourself towards inheriting or counquering the HRE, i would actualy reccomend destroying the HRE title, by then you should be close to being able to rename yourself to the Roman Empire, and next to that the HRE title is silly, and the unhappiness from your HRE vassals will only las a few years to maybe a decade at most, and can be mended somewhat while its there

There is only one real Empire =p
