Can't beat the last quick time event
I get to the "mash" button part, yet I can't beat beat mathias

I have been on it for about an hour now. It seems the faster I mash, the faster I die. I have tried everything from switching keybinds to using a controller yet I can't mash good enough....

How do i beat this?

FPS may affect QTE, that is only if you are lagging. Also make sure you spam the correct button, sometimes the game doesn't make clear it's E or F you are supposed to mash.
I played with a controller. On my setup, it was the Fire and Aim buttons I had to mash, basically the same buttons as you would if you were dual wielding pistols in most any other game.

I'd suspect, if it's the same general system on PC, that you'd press your Left and Right mouse buttons, NOT E or F.
It is probably a glitch, since this game is easy as hell. I didnt have this problem, but I heard about people that had to lower the graphics settings to finish this sequence.

LOL

And, with controller the speed is not fast to hurt the arm, (Anyway I don't care, I played Incredible crisis, so then mash buttons is not problem) but I need to say that the Mathias Event, need more speed than other events in game.

I fout I actually beat him when I slowed down the rate of mashing, just kept it regular...
I had the same frustrating experience, and inexplicably sunseeker's advice worked, though it took a few tries. Probably the only real problem I've found in an otherwise excellent game.
If you're playing on PC and you have an NVIDIA graphics card, try updating your graphics card driver. You can find it fairly easily if you Google NVIDIA drivers. It should be free and will significantly boost the game's performance overall.

I switched the button from the E key over to Mouse1 (left click) and was able to do it. It's not really about how fast you mash it, but rather being able to keep it at a steady rate. The E key is just at such an awkward area on a keyboard.

Yep, same. Just slow and steady, well moderate (that's what she said).
I played whole game with keyboard, maybe you can try to play this sequence with keyboard, and like Vergetta said try to low down resolution and graphics options for smoother Frames per second, please tell me if its work dude.
I had the same problem, then I tried lowering my resolution from 1920x1080 to 1650x1050 and it worked flawlessly. Weird glitch.
"The E key is just at such an awkward area on a keyboard."
not sure what keyboard your playing on but my e is directly next to the W since most PC games and standard keybaords use WASD to move.. the E is about as close as you can get.
this game.........sucks!
Didn't crystal dynamics learn from all of the complaints that were lodged against them from the QTE of TR: Legend that people DO NOT want QTE in Tomb Raider?

If it isn't bad enough that this game is afflicted with QTE , whats worse is that the QTE have some terrible strict timing to it.

ugh.
what a pain in the ass.
how boring.
how annoying.
This is the worst Tomb Raider ever.
This game makes me appreciate just how good Underworld and Anniversary are.
aweful.
1000x worse than Legend.
