Some people might consider it pay to win, but it is possible to play the game completely for free with the help of websites like www.poxbox.net and rune pools(free runes/cards) etc to get you started. You earn gold when you play, buy runes and trade them for others. However gold runes have much less trading power then the ones that are not availible for gold. Every time a new expansion comes out an older one gets in the gold store. And some of the most powerfull runes called the '150k's' and the Angels are only obtainable by gold and trade which do give F2P players the trading power they might need. If you look to get into the game as F2P player this document posted and updated by one of the forum members might be REALLY helpful: http://forums.station.sony.com/poxnora/index.php?threads/get-the-most-bang-for-your-gold.284/#post-928682

It is difficult for F2P players but the game is much more about skill then just powerful and expensive runes. Hope this helps!

You just defined a Pay2Win game.
Yuja 20/ago./2013 às 4:03
How does that define it, it's stating skills matters more than good cards, it is harder without good cards, yes, it is not impossible to get the cards you want without spending a dime, but hard yes. Best players can beat low skilled players with ease by using the least valuable card. Good cards help

this game is bad

You said it yourself; F2P players have a difficult time of it. When someone can hand over money to buy good equipment, the game is now pay-to-win, even if it's possible to slowly grind for that equipment alternatively. Referencing player skill is moot, if a match between two equally skilled players occurs, but one player has paid for better cards, that player will win.

I just tried this game since i really like turn based stuff. The game itself is not bad, and I've nothing against investing a few bucks to get some good cards. But my fear is that we are not talking about a few bucks but a lot of money. Being this game pretty old, I'm not sure I want to invest money and time..probably now only 3l33t are playing..and to get a decent deck will take probably A LOT of money with all the expansions and such already out. Maybe I should wait for Heartstone or the next Magic tactics? ;)

Many of the current players really have spent a lot of money on it, but actually it depends on what you concider "a lot". You can make almost any deck spending $50, and some playable decks for $10-20.

thanks for your comment. Since I really like the unique style of this game, I decided to start playing it and I've no problem investing some money if it will entertain me for a long time

There're many things players aren't glad about, but the thing that this game, as you yourself said, is unique, keeps them playing. And the community, though small, is pretty good, so you should fing players who would help you if you would have questions (you can ask me, for example)).
Don't forget to check forums for some info.
And for buying I would would advise new legendary pack or trading sites (PoxBox.net, TCGBay.com, PoxBrothers.info).
Welcome to the game)

If you want to play against other people YES it is a P2W. Someone who had tons of money could (possibly) get any card you want, versus the free choices that, while fun, are rather limited in some ways. For example, I've been playing the single player campaigns for fun (for no other purpose than to play with RL / Steam friends) to earn up 'Gold' for some cards. I've finished my deck (for now) with the cards I can get (other than ultra expensive cards) but the cards I do not have access to buy are usually better, with some exceptions. The game gives you truly a lot if the conditions are: Single Player / Friends who haven't spent money. I've seen units (just one) that could clober most 'free' decks. People above have mentioned PoxBox, which can be very helpful (new people can often get a few free runes by asking there) but unless someone feel generous you are SOL (You can also spend time earning up cards from gold to trade). Ultimately if you aren't looking for PvP, you are in luck.

Indeed.

The reason this game never took off is (or was dont know the current state of the game), a really bad pay to win game where you had to buy new runes from expansions because they were much more powerful than the old ones.

thanks, p2w is a continuum from mild to harsh so its good to know specifically where it lies along that scale. sometimes p2w on the mild scale can be fun since playing on f2p mode is sorta like playing 'insane' difficulty, sometimes it means a lot of grind which can actually extend the lifespan of the game, really depends thats why its good to get the specifics

No things have really changed to the better look at the date Mostrengo responded to...
try the game out later when it re-releases Pox Nora is back with Desert Owl and they made a lot of improvements SOE has seen this only as a Cashcow to milk every ounce of it they didn't even care to fix the sound for over 6 months.

I wish Desert Owl would have just taken a new id or purged the whole discussion board :/

thats good to hear, I come from another game where its a constant struggle to balance the pay2win and get better changes from the devs, I'll definitely give it a shot again since the community has always seemed to be very strong regardless. Quite rare to find stories of games reclaiming themselves from slipppery p2w slope so definitely worth a look.
