First experience with Pox Nora
Alright, so a friend was raving to me about how great the game is, and wanted me to give it a try.
Tutorial and walkthrough weren't really much of a problem... I'm liking the art style, it feels like there's a lot of depth to it, I can get into this.
I've played a few strategy games before, so I tried a training PVP game...

It starts out fine, I capture the bottom and middle points - but within the second and third turns, suddenly they're swarming out units, a stealthed unit pounces, more units are summoned, and they just absolutely -swarmed- me, a rush of units from their first captured nora point to mine, and suddenly I've gone from four champions to one.

I don't know what I was expecting, I mean, this was my -first- matchup.
I clearly see this isn't going to go in my favor, and I've got no interest struggling until they inevitably wipe me out.

The post battle screen pops up, and it shows they've got 18 wins and 6 losses... I've never played a match before. To add insult to injury, they were playing the exact same deck too.

So I guess I'm really, really frustrated. I've had friends say "try this game!" before and then just proceed to demolish me at a game I'm not familiar with, but... I don't know. Is this pretty standard? Or is there some way you're actually supposed to get better instead of being fodder for people more experienced at the game. <.<;
It sucks to, well, suck at a game so much it feels you're not actually playing it, you're just being used by someone for a quick win. <.<

its like how many years old now, 7 or 8? so yeah i was expecting to get wrecked as well. but honestly it's a breath of fresh air. its so much more complex than the other ccg games ive played and every game i'm learning some new combination, so even though being on the learning curve sucks, its also more fun in a way because theres new things to discover every time I play. In fact I imagine that where it will start to get annoying for me is when I've learned most of the basics and start needing to count things exactly and use various metastrategy. for now im just having a blast though.

example: i get the spell 'ball and chain' in my hand, no idea why i should need something to ground flyers, seems kinda bad. so I just throw it on a flying thing to see what happens, and it turns out it was over a void in the map, so it falls in and dies, amazing :D

I do like how it's complex! I meant this post as more of a "How do I get better" and not a "this game sucks D:<"...

Though it does suck to be at the bottom of the learning curve, yeah.

Hah, you got lucky imo. Had my first PvP match yesterday. The guy told me to take it easy on him because he was new. He steamrolled me. After the match, I saw that the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ had over 1500 matches...

1500 matches? And he told you to take it easy on him? What a jerk :/
Even my friend insisted on playing a few matches with him, he steamrolled me with this ridiculous deck full of spiders with things that were just taking me out in one hit, and swarms of little things that deal ridiculous damage. He even purposefully destroyed a few of his heavy hitters to "try to make it more fair", but it did nothing for me except make me feel a bit patronized.
Eh... the game feels like it could be fun, but it just feels like it's impossible to get into, these bad first impressions didn't really help me with it at all.

i joined the 'pox academy' guild which has a lot of helpful vets in it, greatly enhanced my experience to have a newb friendly sub community. you should apply too
Dingus Oct 23, 2014 @ 9:08am
I don't want to play with vets though. Just fellow noobs :/

Vast majority of PVP consists of veterans or really strong players. They can make a public deck lethal.
Dingus Oct 23, 2014 @ 1:01pm
Might be done with this game then.

If you do join the guild, we have around 70 members, about 5-10 are vets and the rest are ALL new players, the vets are there to help answer questions, give advice and tips to help the new players improve. Its upto you, but if you want to join you'd have a lot of friendly company. If you change your mind click here to apply. https://www.poxnora.com/guilds/apply.do?i=3229

The game is reasonably difficult to get good at, but if you continue to play games you will soon get the hang of it, take a look at the guides section, I've made a couple helpful guides, one of which would provide you with a good budget deck once you aquire a small amount of gold from games.

The basics of getting better are don't let your champs die unless you gain something in exchange and don't spread around damage - always try to focus fire on "one rounding" something, try not to send units in one by one, try to build up 3-4 champs, let your opponent come to you and when they do, unleash attacks on them. You will come unstuck by many things at first but you'll soon start to notice improvements. You are also welcome to join my guild, where we will be able to help you out and give advice.

one thing I forgot to add, make you read every card that gets deployed so you know what it does. and try to remember which spells go with what faction and you'll soon start to learn how to play against certain factions.

Well, I might give it another try... Thank you moles1909, I might need some time to wind down from that, but... if/when I do come back, I'll definately look into the guild thing!

Yeah thats cool, There is a lot of depth to pox, so some players struggle to get into it the first time they try it however its a difficult game to forget and always keeps you coming back

dont give up, play more of the single player games to learn about more cards and get your own strategy down before going back to pvp

I started playing 3 days ago and i have 4 WIns 0 Looses. So i would not say its common that your fodder for people more experienced at the game. I played vs people that are very new to this game too so i think matchmaking is good. ( There arent many people online either....)
