Best Collar/Characteristics And Why?
I ended up with a bunch of collars. I'm having a hard time distinguishing what characteristics are best, so any advice or discussion as to which collars are best or worst and why would be helpful, for general understanding as well as just understanding pets. The collars are:

1. 50 Phys Armor, + 59 Pois Dmg, +85 Hlth, +3% Att Spd

2. 46 Phys Armor, +6% Att Spd

3. 51 Phys Armor, 13 Hlth Stolen on hit

4. 40 Phys Armor, +48 Phys Dmg

5. 33 Phys Armor, +154 Hlth, +45 Ice Dmg, +10 Elec Armor

6. 43 Phys Armor, +10% Crit Hit chance, +9% Att Spd, +40% Chance Brk Shlds

7. 40 Phys Armor, -34 Armor per hit, 35 Phys Dmg Reflected, 5% Chance to Shock 5 secs

I left the names, levels, and rarity off since it doesn't make much difference as far as I can see. I look forward to any input that anyone can give me on the relative merits of these collars overall, as well as the relative usefulness of their characteristics.

While I personally don't know everything about stats and special effects when it comes to pets, it seems to me that the best idea would be to try to get the most effective collar with the most abilities as possible.

That said, I wouldn't go for numbe 6 because even though it does have some good attributes the chance to break shields is a helpful but situational ability, because if you aren't around any shild wielding mobs then the ability won't owrk at all.
I'd also go with number 6 because of the shield breaker. Although you don't run into them all the time, shields really are pretty effective in my own experience and getting rid of them ASAP is a good thing. As a secondary choice I might go with 7 for the negative armor, but only if you don't have something like that on your weapons. I mostly play synergiesmod now tho, so your mileage may vary.
I'd almost keep that shield-breaking one on hand for those times you're in an area with a lot of troublesome shieldbearers.

I happened to receive a 100% shield-breaker tag from an early quest in my Hardcore run, and kept it on through the entire game. I can't say it ever saved my life, but it certainly made some areas easier.
This tag if your pet is a Giant Warsnout, as he can deal the damage other pets can't.
6. 43 Phys Armor, +10% Crit Hit chance, +9% Att Spd, +40% Chance Brk Shlds
Wait, do different pets have different emelental damage or effects?

It looks like its a blank page.
if you go to the wiki, mouse over Torchlight II and then the items section, and then click on fish it loads fine.
OK thanks got it.
I like increased attack speed.. so #6. Your pet scales with you, so minor increases in damage etc. don't mean much. My best collar, a lvl 98 Agitating Golden Torc, has increased (15%) attack speed. I also like tags with a chance to freeze.

This is the order I would select them:
6, 7, 5, 3, 1, 4, 2

I really like anything that steals health because every little bit helps and it has the high armor. That, said, #6 does have a better over all config even though the break shields would not be a must-have. The 10% crit hit would sway me more.
I got a collar with 100% breaking shield.
Unless you'r a petmaster choose a collar that helps YOU. The shieldbreak is my favorite, but statusaliments (espc. poison for the inherent debuff) are allright too. I also like to put a cc skill on my pet (like web or lvl 1 frostbolts)
Ps: The stats (like crtitchance, attackspeed, etc) affect your pet, not yourself, thus outide of a petbuild, they are pretty useless at higher levels
