Maybe your computer is not good enough to run it properly?
Turn off AO in render settings, if you haven't already.
I'm using VMWare Fusion to run SFM. It lag and it's impossible to work on the software. It's also a Windows XP. What I do?
SFM is also slow for me, it doesn't move at ALL!, why did santa even gave me a netbook for christmas?
I have a Windows 7 and when I turned off AO it bumped up a bit, but nothing like 30 fps.
You could list us your PC specs,

You know, that would like, help. Sort of.
Idk what kind of stuff that will help ya but here is what I have...

Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) II x2 260u Processor 1.80 GHz
RAM: 4 GB (3.75 GB usable)
64 bit

Ask if you need more info
Your clock speed is way under the minimum requirement.
Meaning...?
1.80 is less than 3.00.

Get a better processor?... (I think. Im a computer moron. I don't know a quarter of these terms)
Ohhh, I thought you meant time at first!
You said clock speed... You people and your nerd words lol!
What I would recommend for being able to make decent SFM with about 14fps of live rendering

What I have:
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 5450
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 635 Processor (quad core ~2.9 GHz)
RAM: 8GB
OS bit: x64 bit
OS: Windows 10

My GPU is outdated but i can still run sfm just fine.
It also helps to get a boost (for me at least) of 5fps using Razor Cortex game booster to free up RAM and processes.

I hope this helps
